Preparing Mhlongo’s work left me undone. Before the 1st show I couldn’t sleep. “Yehlisan’umoya MaAfrika” (African Nation, Calm Down) left a gaping, open wound, so urgent I had to reach out to my sisters in EmaSwatini who were also tasked to tribute our musical matriarch. I don’t think it is a mistake that healers through song were tasked on the same weekend, in different parts of the continent to tribute our matriarchal, cultural custodian in music who specifically stood for a unified Africa.
Ours is a map of invisible lines, historically drawn to extract and overpower. With that said, protecting our sovereignty should always be the highest priority with the laws of our land adhered to. I make no excuses for illegal behaviour though, what does seem to colour in these lines is colonial legacy, systematic divisive tactics and distractions, unbearable socio-political realities and our bankrupt governance.
There is a global fatigue and strain at play, but it seems a more sinister agenda hides in plain sight. Who really stands to gain?
We are a beautiful people and a fractured people too. As we look for ways to solve social ills and livelihood, Africa MUST be UNIFIED.

I had the honour alongside some of our countries most beloved and celebrated to honour our activist legends in music, 50 years since the 1976 Soweto Uprising, 70 years since the women’s march and 63 years since the founding of the AU. There are many markers of our people self-sacrificing for liberty under the oppressive regime, with much effort for decolonial, continental unity.
It is always a mammoth task to tribute the indelible force that is Mam’ Busi Mhlongo. At times when we say “cultural icon”, it can create an unreachable pedestal for our storytellers, though as a term of respect and endearment. Make no mistake, they are a part of us, those who have laid their lives in service of the human collective.
Maybe to consider that uMhlongo much like many, is our grandmother, is to grasp the weight of the work. To preserve her sentiment like a family heirloom.
Last night, celebrating “Ubuntu” on the tail end of Africa Month brought an urgent call for us to consider kneeling again at the feet of these unifying messages. The music is confrontational, and perhaps we ought to listen to our elders, guiding us through song about the safekeeping of peace and unity in our continent.
