In the heart of Tunisia’s arid landscape, the Berber people had lived for centuries, their lives revolving around the harsh yet beautiful desert. To shield themselves from the scorching sun and extreme temperatures, they devised a unique solution – the Matmata dwellings.
These subterranean abodes were carved into the earth, with large pits dug 5-10 meters deep. From these pits, rooms and courtyards were carefully excavated, creating intricate networks of tunnels and passageways. The Berbers used local materials like stone, earth and wood to construct their homes.
They lived in harmony with their land.

wet the brick walls:
it’s called “tarai” in India — this step prevents the wall from sucking water from the plaster mix, ensuring it doesn’t dry out the mix too quickly and crumble before it gains strength.
mix the ingredients:
combine the sieved site soil with other additives/aggregates — here, we have only used sand + site soil.
add water:
gradually add water to the mix, ensuring it reaches optimal consistency.
check the consistency:
make sure that the plaster mix isn’t too wet. It should be similar to a thick paste.
apply the plaster:
use a trowel or apply the mud plaster to the walls with your own hands.
burnish with a polished flat stone:
this helps compact the plaster, giving it a smooth polished finish.
