That is not real rest. When you collapse onto the sofa at the end of a marathon day you haven’t earned that moment of peace. You don’t have to earn that.

“Do you miss America?”
Every single time, people ask me this question, without hesitation, I answer the same way.
Nope.
Not even a little. I love Americans, but I don’t miss America.
I don’t miss America some of the time. I don’t miss America on my hardest days here in Sicily. And surprisingly I don’t miss America on holidays. There has not been a single day since I moved to Palermo that I have woken up and thought, I wish I were back in America.
Now don’t get me wrong. I miss my people. I miss my family. I miss my dog. Those things are real, and I hold them close.
But here is the thing nobody talks about: I was so busy working in America that I barely saw those people anyway. American hustle culture consumed everything and almost every minute of my time.

It’s not about caring less. I have never been able to do that in my entire life and I do not want to start now. What I needed was a way to answer the question that did not force me to abandon one true thing in order to say another. I am a person with a life, with work I love and dinners I look forward to. I am also a witness to a moment in history that is genuinely heavy.
