I will not get into politics and I recognize that I have a privilage to be able to say that.
Like many people around the world, homeland is something so important and vital. I have had the immense privilage to be able to return to mine for the past almsot year.. rebuilding a life there, as I decided the one I previously had no longer suits the vision I had for my future. I recognize the privilage in being able to do so, trust me it is not lost on me. I am reminded constantly by bitter individuals. I have been trying to exist in this new life, as equitably and hopefully, respectfully as I can. This past month, the world has watched as bombs fall upon a country that is filled with beauty and love. Yes, I understand there is an insidious, deep layer of oppression that also exists in Iran, and that does not lessen the blow of each missle and bomb. I have happily lost connection to Iranians that have deemed me "not worthy" of caring about Iran, because my body came to this earth in another country. I have been told I need to be silent, speak up, shut up, change my views.
Are we not able to have love? What is a burning desire and longing if it is not riddled with complexities?
Last month, I left Iran to go to Oman for an interview. If I had known, what would have happened in the next four days, I can assure you, I would've never left. However those were not my circumstances. I found myself stranded in a country that shared waters with the dirt I wanted to kiss, but am now unable to lay on. I found myself spending days looking, squinting across the oceans horizons... hoping to somehow make up the terrain of Iran on the otherside. Crying and screaming to the ocean, in the uncertainty of what lays on the otherside...
are my family safe?
when was the last time they were able to laugh?
I felt such an intense and deep guilt that I was not there with them.
I am returning to you soon, sweet kitty cat Iran. I can't wait to hold my loved ones close.
I wish all Iranians everywhere, can do the same soon too.

Thinking of all the hands that will no longer be able to hold a piece of bread, smell a fresh flower. So senselessly taken from this world, so hopeful and angry. A mother comes home to an empty table she canβt feed, a son reaches out to a father that can no longer hear him.. what is the cost of Freedom? Does it have to be this way? Those that are able to still wake up in the morning and nourish our bodies are so lucky. Cherish each moment you have.
I have been keeping busy by making art and trying to help in ways I can. Calling and connecting folks, being the middle man for strangers and their loved ones. I wish I could hold my dog again soon, and the ones I love back home. I am so grateful for the people in my life. I wish for Iran to be for the Iranian people. And I hope that comes soon. The most beautiful group of humans I have ever known. I am so thankful for the good ones I have met here and how they have been there for me at this time.

This piece is made with two images, my passport photo, and a re-appropriated photo of a british tourists journey to Iran pre 1979. I was gifted a collection of this mans photos that someone had found on ebay. It was given to me when I thought I would never be able to view Iran myself. Left to yearn and ponder for my homeland through the lenses of an extractive tourist. Within this collection were images of Persepolis, the land and symbol of the greatness of Persian culture. A culture that has been under attack from multiple forces.
I am uploading it again as a reminder that the Iranian people have been and will be strong, and preserve past anything that comes against them.
To be able to be in Iran now, walk the streets of Tehran everyday and see what is happening with my own eyes, is the most painful privilege.
