Death-worlds and Afterlives was a 3-day workshop in April 2025 that brought together scholars and cultural practitioners from varied disciplines whose works address and activate theorisations & research of
death-in-life.
Conceptualised by artist-researcher Zara Julius, and hosted in collaboration with the Pressing Matter project, & the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study as part of their Global Blackness project at the University of Johannesburg, the workshop invited participants to not only share their respective works that engage questions of death, dying and the African body (and by extension, land), but also to collectively imagine what might come after and outside of death and death-worlds.
The workshop tackled necroviolence, the necropolitical, and the necrographic, and proposed urgent questions through varied perspectives of the Black radical tradition as situated on and oriented toward the African continent.
Practically, the workshop was an opportunity to share aspects of research that are maybe informed by theory, but also privilege an understanding that time-based media and embodied knowledges are laden with theory too, and inform practice and scholarship.
This convening was an exercise in Black Study in all its forms: communal study that is at once an intellectual, social and aesthetic practice.

In this conversation we speak to social practice artist, researcher and vinyl selector Zara Julius based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Zara is the director of Konjo, a creative research agency focused on sonic histories from the African continent and diaspora. Working with sound, video, performance and objects, Zara’s practice involves the collection, selection and creation of archives through research projects.

Quiet Conversations are a series of conversations with artists, architects, researchers and thinkers working in and with the south, as a conceptual site and geography. The conversations work towards a methodology of shared sites, sounds, objects and practices through a turn to acts of remembrance, recall and repair. In this series we invite a close and intimate listening of meandering conversations; to stay with the words, silences and utterances that through conversation share entangled and implicated relationships of site, objects, people and places. Drawing upon sound and the act of speaking and listening as affective and political, together we ask, how might located and grounded practices enable us to draw out relational histories? How might creative research and associated methodologies of critique generate ways of listening, speaking to and engaging with the built environment, architectures, land and violence beyond extraction? And how might we share and build collective methodologies for working and thinking together?

A Funeral For… is a limited edition hand-bound art book created in collaboration with Zoé Samudzi. As the cornerstone of a larger transdisciplinary project, A Funeral For… operates at the critical nexus of archival intervention, sonic inquiry, and speculative memory work, proposing a new form of engagement with the spectral remains of empire & restitution discourse.
The book explores the entanglements of death-in-life, land, and the necrographies of both imperial violence and indigenous memory through the respective practices of each contributor. These exchanges unfold in dialogue with archival images (from various collections at ), drawing the reader into a relational practice of witnessing that calls for an attunement to the affective, the spiritual, the sonic, the ecological, the ancestral and the capacious ontological possibilities offered by each register.

A new installation by Zara Julius commissioned by and for the Oscillations group exhibition currently on show at Akademie der Künste, Berlin (tiergarten) open until May 19th 2024. The piece plays every half hour.
DEATH IS PART OF THE PROCESS is dedicated to the thousands of South African political prisoners whose stories we don’t know, as well the thousands of Palestinian political prisoners, and their families, who continue to face the brunt of the Israeli occupation.
Struggle, too, is a global project.

I might have spent most of the evening hiding in the corner eating french fries, but I am very grateful for everyone’s support, generosity, and willingness to be pushed by not just the work itself, but also by the process of producing the work.
I am really proud of this project, and I hope that it continues to breathe in ways we haven’t imagined yet. Ethnographic museums are truly not spaces of ease, but I’m committed to some kind of rearticulation of memory & care work beyond the paradigms of looting / extraction, surveillance, hoarding & consumption.
The show is open at the Weltmuseum Vienna until 2 April ‘24.
