Two years before we left for Saudi, my family moved to Streetsville. There was a huge tree I could see from the window next to me and my sister's bed. I believed churails lived in that tree. I imagined they were desi throughout the world and wore shalwar kameez. I was terrified of them and couldn't sleep thinking about the tree.
I later learned that churails are thought to be women who died in childbirth or through abuse and come back to haunt men. Commonly, 'churail' is also used as an insult against women. Women who have their hair loose and open are churails. Women who defy society are churails. Women who are too loud are churails. Women who are ugly are churails.
'Churails in Streetsville' envisions those same churails with my childhood-self approaching them with curiosity rather than fear.
These were made using blockprint, paint, and applique. Incorporating truck art, ajrak, fresco designs, and more. Stay tuned for the launch!
Pigeons (kabootar) were highly favoured and kept as sport in South Asia. All over the world, they have been used as messengers. Modern technology made them redundant, leaving them to survive on their own after humans brought them to urban spaces. Now, they often carry negative connotations in many parts of the world.
I was shocked to know this because I did not grow up with this sentiment. Pigeons are an important part of Pakistani culture and feeding them is an act of charity.
Thus, as Pakistani migrants, we chose 'Kabootr' due to their connection to South Asia and history of migration. (Mainly, I like the way it sounds.)

and I can sacrifice my life for this pigeon

This seems to be the case because there are, in fact, a lot of contemporary Pakistani artists using miniature-style painting in what is called 'neo-miniature'.
When I visited Wazir Khan Masjid for the third (?) time in 2023, I took an interest in the floral wall paintings after meeting fresco master Rizwan Saeed, who is restoring and preserving this craft. I found out that naqashi fresco painting was endangered.
This led me to first recreate one of the paintings on the walls and then attempt to create my own floral paintings inspired by the mosque (although, I am not actually making a fresco using natural pigments and plaster).
Recently, I also painted some miniature-style botanical paintings.
I think it is a beautiful part of our culture. However, to assume any race makes one type of art is a disservice to it.
