I wasn’t going to follow this trend until I looked back at my 2016 felt sooooo nostalgic it hurt.

For some reason it feels like I used to do so much more, or that there was more time, or that things just moved more slowly. I hope I start to feel that way again.

Jan 4th, 2016 I moved to Beijing for the first three months of the year to test out a career path I thought I might want, and for another excuse to go back to China (my 4th time at that point). While being based in Beijing I made one of my China travel dreams come true and went to the Harbin Snow & Ice Festival and it was even more incredible than I dreamed it would be. I spent Lunar New Year in Hong Kong, visited Siem Reap in Cambodia and decided at that time the United Nation’s stream of work wasn’t for me.

In June Nhan made the decision to move back to Ottawa (we started off long distance) and him, one of his besties and I road-tripped back to Ottawa from Alberta.

At the end of July I won a Virgin Mobile contest for a VIP experience at Osheaga. It was my first time to the festival AND I got to see Leon Bridges and Mø.

In August we took an open air biplane ride over downtown Ottawa and Gatineau and in September I ran my first 5km run (first of 2 before I quit running ha!). In September I also saw Sixto Rodriguez in concert with my Dad at Massey Hall in Toronto.

The rest of the year was more quiet but wow, what a crazy, incredible year 2016 was for me.

Thanks for living through the nostalgia with me!

Ottawa’s Newest Korean Restaurant is a must-visit!

We absolutely loved our first experience at Hanyang Jokbal and will defy be going back. I’m on a mission to try new-to-me foods in 2026 and this one knocked it out of the park.

We started with the bacon kimchi pancake ($22) which came with a delicious dipping sauce. This was my first time having it and it won’t be my last, I just wish it was slightly more crispy on the bottom but regardless it was delicious.

The restaurant is known for its jokbal (pork hock) and bossam (pork shoulder or pork belly) which are braised, grilled or roasted different ways. Each order is enough for 2 (or 3 it’s a lot!!!) and ranges from $42-$48.

Ordering tips:
1. For your first visit I recommend getting the half and half with one bossam and one jokbal choice to see which you prefer. The pork hock has a lot more gelatinous texture to it where as the bossam meat itself is a bit more tender but not gelatinous. I loved the flavour of the spicy jokbal and would definitely have it again but I’d get just a half order. Variety is the spice of life!
2. Definitely get the DIY rice balls ($12) it’s such a delicious flavour and texture, and the perfect way to balance out your meal. Shout out to for recommending I order this. The whole table loved it!

I’m so happy to see this spot finally open. You can’t make reservations but you can join the waitlist via their Google info so it’s worth checking out before heading there if you’re planning to go at a peak time.

A new, delicious and unique-to-Ottawa food experience, with friendly and great service, and a comfortable atmosphere!? I almost feel like I teleported back to Seoul and it was definitely a great first meal out to kick off the new year!

My Top 10 Favourite New or New-to-Me dishes of 2025 in Ottawa!

What was your favourite bite of 2025?

Here’s my list:
10. Cheese burger pizza - - this hit exactly how I dreamed it would. Toppings nailed the concept and I really loved the crust.

9. Japanese-style Wanapaku Sandos - these were so fresh and such a unique surprise to add to my 2025. Thank you again to for the recommendation!

8. Sukiyaki - - On a cold winter night the sukiyaki and little fried salted clams hit hard!

7. Corn and ‘nduja pizza + ‘the roots’ mocktail - - This new neighbourhood pizza spot is pumping out unique and seasonal pizzas with the best mocktail I’ve ever had.

6. Stuffed falafel - - absolutely love the crunch on the fresh falafel here and the sumac red onions stuffed inside take these to the next level. Falafel lovers you have to try it!

5. Bingsu shaved ice cream- - the mango bingsu that launched this summer was simply incredible! One of the most refreshing things I’ve ever had.

4. Favourite Vietnamese Restaurant - - I can’t believe it took me until 2025 to finally try this spot and it’s now my new favourite for ALL Vietnamese dishes. Best pho, best bun cha, best grilled pork chop & rice plates etc.

3. Delicious, drinkable creations - - flavour profiles of my wildest dreams crafted into the most luxurious sips. Wow.

2. Soca, French omelette & fondue - - the smallest little spot just off Bank St. served up some of the freshest and most finely crafted food that I had all year. It single handedly restored my faith in French food.

1. Adam’s Bakes and everything they touch - - haven’t met a treat by him that I didn’t love and I can’t believe it took me this long to try. Don’t be like me. The poppy seed bear claw CHANGED me.

Honourable mention (only because it was an event and not available at the moment) to the incredible honey tasting event put on by and hosted by. Absolutely adored this experience!

Under $10 delicious, fresh and unique Japanese-style sandwiches in Ottawa!

I recently heard about this place and had to go try it! Some Coffee, Some Tea is a hidden little coffee counter in the heart of Centretown and they serve up delicious coffee, a wide variety of bubble tea drinks and MOST UNIQUELY these wanapaku Japanese-style sandwiches. I tried the shrimp tempura and tomago (egg) options and really enjoyed them!

The tempura shrimp sandwich ($9.45) as a horseradishy kick to it which I loved and the tomago (egg) ($8.95) is nice and dense with a little sweetness. Not only were they a perfect and refreshing bite, I love how they are wrapped in their own branded paper and in the most perfect sized boxes. So kawaii!

If you’re looking to try something new, or need a satisfying lunch or afternoon snack in downtown Ottawa, I can’t recommend it enough. I’ll definitely be back to try their bubble teas!

Thank you for the recommendation!

📍 171 Bank St. 2nd floor (7:30am - 4pm). Go up the concrete stairs at Bank and Laurier by eggspectation and go straight through the doors to your left at the top of stairs. You’ll find the shop inside the building just past the indoor entry to Jinsei Ramen.

Ottawa’s NEWEST brunch menu just launched and it’s unique and delicious!

When I saw Bodega had panettone French toast on their new brunch menu I knew I had to go try it. It absolutely did not disappoint and the espresso mascarpone was truly the icing on the cake.

New to me was the Sunday “gravy” poutine. Think of Nona’s meat sauce over fries with toasted mozzarella. Comfort in a bowl. I’m definitely adding a fried egg on top next time.

As an egg loving girlie I had to try the eggs in purgatory and I was excited to find olives in the red sauce. Dipping the warm foaccia in the yolk and then smearing it around in the pan? Chef’s kiss.

They are slinging a house chopped cheese, have a great mocktail menu and even have a bottomless mimosa option!

Go check out for brunch and let me know what you think!

Poutine lovers, you have you ever heard of WHITE SAUCE poutine!?

I hadn’t either until a few months ago. Like I said before, it’s pretty amazing to live in Ottawa right on the border of two provinces and get to experience the cuisine and food culture of both places. In doing some digging, I found out that white sauce poutine is actually a local Outaouais speciality and outside of the area it’s pretty unknown!

I tried it at Gaga Patates thanks to ’s recommendation and it was a delicious and definitely unique poutine experience that I think all Ottawans and Québécois, maybe even all Canadians should try at least once in their life!

Are there any other regional poutine variations you know about? What’s your favourite casse-croûte in the region?

Anyone know where I can find a peppercorn sauce poutine?! I think I’d love that!

Ottawa, if you’re looking for a unique activity this winter and fall you have to try tufting at TututuSpace.

I can’t recommend it enough.

I leaned into my foodie-self and of course made a watermelon rug but you can really design anything you want.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done it before because you get a quick lesson on how it all works and the staff there will support you throughout the whole process.

I recommend keeping the pattern simple if it’s your first time and just having fun with it. Once you finish filling in your design, you leave the creation at the shop and the staff there will trim and clean up your creation for pick up shortly after.

Tututspace also has other creative activities like cellphone case and mirror decorating, ceramic painting and candle making too. Go check them out!

Ottawa’s FIRST Katsu restaurant just opened and I found it just in the second day that they were open!

You know the food is made with love when they even make their own breadcrumbs!!!

The restaurant was in soft opening and had a limited menu but I loved the Seoul Katsu with a light brown gravy style sauce served with fresh seasoned cabbage. Taking a bite with both together was perfect! Each plate is also served with miso soup, rice and house made pickles. We also tried the Ottawa Katsu server on a sizzling plate with onions and cabbage as a base and a super umami red miso sauce. Absolutely loved the sauce on the this one. Super unique and delicious.

Tokyo Crispy is serving pork, chicken and tofu katsu bases and I can’t wait to go try the Tokyo Katsu option on yakisoba once the full menu is launched.

The food was so good I started asking the owner some questions and he told me he had been running restaurants in Vancouver for 15 years before coming to Ottawa. We are so lucky to now have Tokyo Crispy in town!

Nhan and I were heading to Green Fresh Market on Merivale when I spotted this new restaurant and we couldn’t resist checking it out and I’m so glad we did!

Always peep the PLAZAS people!
