What We Carry Forward. Lessons the Land Taught Us Last Year

As we begin a new year, we reflect on what the land taught us. From harvesting birch together to gathering in circle around regenerative economies, the teachings were clear: learning happens on the land, responsibility comes with harvesting, and futures rooted in culture, care, and reciprocity are needed.

"We also saw how excited people are to build futures that feel aligned. There is real interest in Indigenous made, handcrafted, and sustainable products that come from the land in respectful ways. People want work that feels connected and carries meaning. This matters, but it also carries responsibility."

🌿 Regenerative Economies Gathering | November 16-18, 2025

Last month, we gathered on the Traditional Territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and Ta’an Kwäch’än Council at the Yukon Ski Lodge. It was a beautiful circle of women, including Knowledge Keepers and community members who are passionate about creating a better future for our young people.

On this land that teaches and sustains us, we know that people are stronger and healthier when they are connected to the land. Learning Indigenous languages and harvesting in a good way is the foundation of this project. We are moving forward with the firm belief that our communities can create meaningful careers and opportunities from the products we harvest. Market trends show a growing interest in Indigenous-made, handcrafted, and sustainable products created with plants from the land.

We began our time with a Silverberry (Wolfberry) workshop led by Elder Nyla Klugie. As we worked with the plant materials, this time together helped us set a collective intention so we could begin grounded and heart-centered.

From there, we moved into two full days of discussions. Nadia Joe and Alanna Quock facilitated conversations around key themes including cultural impacts, community readiness, land and infrastructure, and capacity and partnerships.

We closed the gathering with a screening of the film created for this project produced by Shot in the Dark Productions.

The future of regenerative economies must be guided by our cultural practices and led by First Nations to ensure everything is done in a respectful way.

The vision within Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow guides this work and reaffirms our commitment to protect the land while creating opportunities for the next generation.

We look forward to sharing more of this journey with you.

Thank you to all of our participants who gathered and shared their reflections with us: Joella Hogan, Cherish Fairclough, Elspeth Mathau, Nadia Joe, Alanna Quock, Nicole Jahraus, Catherine Littlefield, Nicole Hutton, Hilary Lefort, Nyla Klugie, Kadrienne Hummel, Eileen Peter, Jani Djokic, Jocelyn Joe-Strack, Sylvia Frisch, Corrine Bullock, and Lily Laboucan.

When Joella moved to her grandmother's community, she was looking for a way to connect people to culture and to land. And she has done just that - from getting Elders and Youth out on the land to gather wild botanicals to offering soap workshops and mentorship opportunities.

Joella's vision is for The Yukon Soaps Company to create space for people to develop skills, share in revenue generation, and rebuild sacred connections to plants and relationships with one another.
