It was another unforgettable experience to be part of the amazing STS community. Due to severe jet lag, I only slept 3 hours a night for the entire week. After such busy months leading up to the festival, I’m not going to lie, it was physically and mentally very challenging. But I gave it my best. It wasn’t perfect, nothing I do ever feels perfect. Still, it was my most sincere effort, and I made sure to put all of my love, care, and heart. Living life this way is deeply fulfilling.
I learned so much from every STS faculty member, and I found tremendous inspiration in all of the young musicians, especially those who reached out for individual lessons with me. Personal connection means everything to me because I pursue music for friendship and world peace.
Every faculty member is unique and special. Around 80% of what I perform these days is solo works, so it’s always a little intimidating to jump back into a group of world-class chamber musicians. (Of course, they are all phenomenal soloists as well, but many of them primarily perform in orchestras or ensembles.) It’s also a wonderful reminder that I can still be a good section musician too.
Playing trombone is ridiculously difficult, it’s insane. But I can’t imagine doing anything else besides performing music, sharing my stories, my love, and my journey through it. Music has literally saved my life.
I’m truly humbled by the kindness and warmth of the STS community. Thank you all for making this such a meaningful experience. Love you all, and I can’t wait to see you again soon. ❤️

それぞれの思いを持って音楽に挑戦し、舞台へ向かっていくというのは、他にはない独特なことだと思います。特にソロは個人的で個性的なドラマがあります。初めてソロを披露される方もたくさんおられて、慣れないことにすごく緊張したと思いますが、皆さんの姿を「いいなぁ」と思いながら見ていました。
僕は全員分のレッスンを担当。フェス一日目は10:30から20:00まで、30分休憩一回のみで、かなり頑張りました。今回は指導中心でしたが、僕がレッスンしてる音大生たちとカルテットもやって、これがとても良かった！
そして！作曲家の高嶋圭子さんが東京から来てくださいました！特別演奏として、高嶋圭子さんの新曲「輝く明日へ」を高嶋さんのピアノと共演。この曲は、初心者の方向けに書かれた曲ですが、初めてソロに挑戦される方にもオススメです！

例えば、「今日は何か良いことがあるかもしれない」と思いながら過ごしていると、普段なら見過ごしてしまうような、小さな嬉しい出来事にも気づきやすくなります。建物に入るときに知らない人がドアを開けてくれたり、電車でたまたま席が空いて座れたり、誰かと気持ちよくあいさつを交わしたり、ごく些細なことでも自分にとってポジティブな出来事として受け取れるようになります。その小さな積み重ねが大切だと僕は思っています。
逆に、いつも怒っている人がいます。そういう人は意識的か無意識的かに関わらず、いつも怒るべき理由を探している状態なのだと思います。怒りは正義感から生まれることが多く、使命のように感じられることもあります。しかし、怒りに注意を向け続けると、世の中の理不尽さばかりが目に入り、結果として怒りに満ちた世界を生きることになります。
人間の脳は、目の前の現実をそのまま見ているわけではありません。膨大な情報の中から、自分が重要だと考えているものを優先的に拾い上げます。
例えば、赤い車がほしいと思ってる人は、街を走っている赤い車に目が行くでしょうし、トロンボーンが好きな人は、トロンボーンについてのSNS投稿を読むでしょう。
無意識的に感じるかもしれませんが、何に注意を向けるかというのは、重要な問題です。
舞台で演奏するときの緊張についても同じだと思います。緊張に対して無力に感じる人が多いですが、そうではないと思います。人間は考える動物です。感情や気分そのものを完全にコントロールすることは難しくても、いま何を考えるか、いま何に意識を向けるかは、自分自身で選ぶことができます。
失敗したらどうしようと考えるのか。それとも、音楽について考えるのか。その選択によって大きく変わります。
起こる全ての出来事をうまくコントロールすることは不可能かもしれませんが、何に注意を向けるのか、何を大切なものとして扱うのかは選ぶことができます。意志の力は莫大な可能性を秘めていると思いますし、選択肢があるというのは、とても良い知らせだと思います。その選択の積み重ねが、人生の見え方や感じ方、方向性、ひいては成功を形づくっていくのだと僕は思います。

「理解せねばならない」、「何かを感じねばならない」、「せっかくお金や時間を使っているのだから、何かを受け取らねばならない」と思うと、かえって面白くないかもしれません。でも、退屈だと思うのであれば、それは楽しみ方を知らないだけ、だと僕は思います。
クラシック音楽と共に生きる音楽家は、音と暮らす生活そのものが、その人の人生観や生き甲斐と、直接的に通じるものがあるのだと思います。だから、人生の多くの時間やリソースを費やして、毎日練習をしたり、わざわざ外国に留学したり、高い楽器を買ったりするわけです。単なる物好きの集まりではありません(笑) クラシック音楽の世界とは、それだけ素晴らしいものであると、僕は何の疑いもなく断言できます。
情報が多く、どんどん忙しい世の中になっていますが、一つのことに純粋に集中する行為というのは、素晴らしいものだと思います。禅に通じるものがあります。
ただ、クラシック音楽などいわゆる芸術と言われるものは、向こうから歩み寄ってはくれない側面があります。こちらから自発的に耳を開き、どういう世界なのか、心を開いて、しかと聞こうとしないと、なかなか特別な体験には至らないのかもしれません。
音は空気の振動です。空気だけではなく、その空間にあるもの全てが共鳴するものです。私たちの身体、耳、心、が共鳴し、その体勢や環境を作ることが必要なのかもしれません。硬直した身体、凝り固まった耳や思考だと、なかなか共鳴せず、受け取ることは難しいのかもしれません。共に振るえるから、共振なのです。
音と共に心が振るえる。自分自身の存在を音の響きに共鳴させる。美しいハーモニーを他者と作る。そんな素晴らしい生き方を、僕らは自然と選んできたのではないか。そんなふうに思っています。

2014年、東京にて日本出身の若手トロンボーン奏者によって結成されたスライドジャパン。翌2015年、東京・兵庫・名古屋・福島での公演を皮切りに鮮烈なデビューを果たし、2016年には1st CD「TAKE OFF」をリリース。全国ツアーを成功させ、躍動感あふれる演奏と革新的な企画力で注目を集めました。その後も、コロナ禍におけるリモート企画「スラジャ・オンライン」や、日本全国のトロンボーン奏者を巻き込んだ「76本のトロンボーンプロジェクト」など、時代に寄り添いながら新たな音楽の形を発信しました。
