When we arrived, a doe and her two fawns were wandering the edge of the property. My husband and I just stopped. Nobody said anything for a moment. It felt like the right way to begin a day like this.
Justine wasnât looking for anything too intense â a little time before the ceremony, the ceremony itself, family, some candids of people having a genuinely good time. What she trusted most was that weâd handle the rest. Sheâs not a photographer, she said. She just knew she could trust us to see what mattered.
It rained. They chose to hold the ceremony outside anyway. And then â because of course they did â they got in a canoe together. Rain on the lake, old growth trees in every direction, two people completely at ease in the middle of all of it.
The reception that followed was exactly the kind I love most. Toasts that made people cry. A dance floor that actually got used. Limbo. The kind of party where two families who barely knew each other at 4pm were completely tangled up in each otherâs joy by 8.
That was what Justine was most excited about going in â their two families meeting for the first time. Connorâs family spread across the country, finally all in one place. And watching it happen â the moment those two groups of people realized they were going to love each other â thatâs the kind of thing you canât plan for. You just have to be ready when it arrives.

The main visual reference point for Jenna and Chadâs wedding was the final church scene in Baz Luhrmannâs Romeo + Juliet. They wanted candles everywhere, a blue neon crosses, dark red velvet drapery, vintage furniture and low lighting.
âI wasnât afraid of colour and dark colour at thatâ, Jenna told us. âI didnât want a single white flower at the venue. We got so many compliments from vendors that our wedding felt unique and different from the standard white and cream wedding dĂ©cor. I wanted very gothic feeling, dripping amaranth from the chandeliers and huge candelabras. I wanted candelabras on the tables. I handmade the name cards for the tables with little vials filled with black tea and scrolls with each personâs name on them. I really wanted it to feel immersive.â
