그러던 지난겨울, 거친 수목 작업의 가위질 아래 아끼던 장미 넝쿨들이 맥없이 잘려 나가고 말았다. 그리 오랜 시간은 아니나, 매해 쌓아가던 우리의 소중한 추억의 한 귀퉁이가 베어진 듯 했다. 마음 한구석이 서늘하게 내려앉았다.
심란했다. 언젠가 이곳을 떠나더라도, 매해 찬란한 장미의 계절이 오면 찾아와 기록을 남기고 싶은 공간이었는데. 우리의 정답고도 예쁜 의식이 이렇게 허무하게 끝나는 것일까 하는 마음에 상실감마저 밀려들었다.
그 때 문득 내 마음속에서 AI라는 현대의 마법이 고개를 들었다. 인공지능이 정교하게 빚어낸 장미로 가짜 풍경을 만들어, 그럴듯한 사진을 완성해 볼까 하는 유혹이 일었다.
그러나 이내 고개를 저었다. 그것이 과연 우리에게 무슨 의미가 있을까. 인공지능이 완벽한 픽셀의 미학을 창조할 수는 있어도, 그 과정에 깃들 우리만의 웃음소리와 그로 인해 아름다울 기억은 만들어낼 수 없잖은가.
나는 집으로 가던 차를 돌려 고속터미널 꽃시장으로 향했다. 품 가득 붉은 장미를 안아 들고, 정성스레 가시를 다듬어내며 우리만의 새로운 무대를 마련했다.
비록 AI가 그려낼 수 있었을 풍부함에는 미치지 못했을지라도, 손끝에 닿은 여린 꽃잎의 촉감과 공간을 메우던 향기로 완성된 진짜의 순간이 주는 만족감은 더할나위 없었다. 됐다. 비로소 안도감이 들었다.
