Our talented team of volunteer Flower Arrangers have created some beautiful seasonal displays throughout the Minster.

Many of the flowers have been gathered from the gardens around the Minster, bringing a little bit of the season indoors 🧡

Our Flower Arrangers play an important role in the life of the Minster, giving their time and creativity to help enhance worship, mark special occasions and connect us all to God’s Creation.

In 1984, a devastating fire caused temperatures to soar above 450°C, shattering York Minster’s 16th-century Rose Window into over 40,000 pieces.

Conservators in the 1980s achieved the impossible, using the very best techniques of their time to painstakingly repair the window.

Hear from Sophie Gwynn, Senior Stained Glass Conservator at, on the incredible dedication of that 1980s rescue effort and why, faced with today’s warmer summers and shifting climate, we must now build upon their legacy🌹

For over 500 years, the Rose Window at York Minster has been a quiet constant, watching over our city, welcoming visitors from every corner of the globe, and bathing the nave in its iconic light.

Crafted in the early 1500s as a symbol of unity, this masterpiece has survived centuries of history, from turbulent wars to the devastating fire of 1984. Today, deterioration from environmental exposure means it requires our care once again.

We are now underway to Rescue the Rose Window, a major conservation effort to preserve and protect this breathtaking landmark for generations to come.

From the expert stained glass conservators from and our stonemasons to our local community and visitors worldwide, it takes all of us to safeguard the Rose Window’s legacy.

How you can help Rescue the Rose
🌹Donate: Support the specialised restoration work directly
🌹Share: Help tell the story of the window with friends and family

Together, we can ensure the Rose Window continues to inspire for the next 500 years.

They say "it's what's inside that counts"...

We've all stood outside and grabbed that iconic York selfie, but unless you step through these great doors, and experience this magnificent cathedral for yourself, have you really visited York Minster?

Have you seen sunlight stream through the Great East Window, the single largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country, or heard the sound of stonemasons chipping away at their creations?
Have you felt the reverberations of the Grand Organ as you walk through the cavernous Nave, or descended into the Undercroft Museum to see some of the 300,000 precious objects in our care?
Have you met our skilled gardeners who nurture the green space that surrounds us, or spoken to our Police Officers who work night and day to protect all those who visit?
Have you sat still inside this holy and historic place and simply absorbed the atmosphere of somewhere that has been a source of inspiration and connection for 1400 years?

Have you ever visited York Minster?
Sometimes we run out of words to describe this special, beautiful and ancient place. So, we commissioned a York poet to describe the Minster for us.

Make sure you have the volume up - we promise it is worth it.

Thank you to Kitty for the poem, Dave for reading it so beautifully, and Hewitt and Walker for bringing it to life with beautiful visuals.
