You’ve been warned 😘 oh and also being able to do the splits is a great side effect haha

But it’s really not the main point!

Yoga has completely evolved me as a human, as a being of creation, as a devoted disciple to the universe ✨🤍

Yoga comes with soooo many magical benefits to the physical body;

- altered gene expression
- boosted longevity
- increased immunity
- stronger muscles
- glowing skin
- increased mobility
(The list goes on and is supported by science)

But the biggest side effects??

are internal -> and they radiate externally

an awakening to your true identity

a removal of layers of personality, ego, society

to reveal the divine creator you are 🧡

how to have more space to react to situations how you want to, not government by emotions

How to treat others with love kindness and joy

You learn to listen to yourself, the universe

how to follow your dharma your purpose

and how to work with the universe to make your dreams come true

Yoga is a lifelong practice that happens mostly off the mat, in everyday life, decisions, reactions

It’s all yoga!

Here’s to igniting our inner glow through yoga together ✨🤍

What’s a side effect of yoga you’ve discovered through your practice? A few others on my list:

- perspective
- support for others
- awareness of infinite abundance
- connection
- opportunities
- endless love

Love,
Lucy

Watching this, you want to scream at the bird, Just let go! You can fly! From the outside, the escape seems so obvious but this video is a perfect metaphor for the human condition.

We look at this and wonder why it doesn’t just fly away, yet we fail to see that we do the exact same thing. We are often blind to our own wings when we are ones in the middle of the storm.

This bird is gripping a flimsy branch in a gale, acting on pure instict to hold on. But ironically, the struggle isn’t the wind, the struggle is the grip.

Here is where we trap ourselves in the same storm

In Relationships: We white knuckle our way through toxic dynamics. We stay in connections that whip us back and forth emotionally, highs and lows, anxiety and relief, because we are terrified that letting go means falling. We choose the turbulence of the “known” over the peace of the “unknown.”

In Careers: We cling to jobs or titles that drain our soul. The environment is chaotic, the stress is violent, but we hold on tight because we mistake that paycheck or that status for our only source of safety. We endure the thrashing because we don’t trust our ability to land somewhere better.

In Our Minds: We hold onto old grudges, past versions of ourselves, or limiting beliefs. We replay past traumas like a loop, letting them toss us around day after day. We think holding onto the anger protects us, but really, it just keeps us in the storm.

The Lesson, If you are exhausted right now, ask yourself: Is the storm really too strong? Or am I just refusing to unclench my hands?💫

Go write your own story! 💪🏻

These past two years taught me that strength isn’t just physical. Its mental. It’s choosing to show up when the page is blank and writing anyway. The rest will follow.

Last day of 2025! ✨

Of the countless things yoga has shared with all of us the last 50 years, one of the most profound takeaways is that the future is a string of continuous nows. As such, what will be is determined by what we do in the present. That, to us, is the future of yoga. Not the most high-tech biofeedback device. Not the next fashion trend. But how we practice, interpret, and share this thing called yoga.

We turned to experts to ask for their “nows.” Here’s what they shared.

As we celebrate 50 years of sharing yoga poses, philosophy, and everyday ways that the practice informs your life, we want to express our appreciation for the fact that the yoga community has become more accessible and inclusive than at any other time in history. And we want to explore the failings that have happened along the way as America and each of us who practice and teach the ancient tradition attempt to translate it to contemporary practice.

We can only do better by paying more attention. Help us celebrate what yoga means to so many and how we can step back from appropriation and ensure yoga is experienced in its fullness with our coverage of yoga in the present.

🖊️: YJ Editors + Countless Contributors Throughout the Last 50 Years
Throughout the last five decades, Yoga Journal has evolved from a simple community newsletter to an internationally recognized name thanks to the thousands of yoga teachers, writers, editors, photographers, and other experts and enthusiasts who have shared their knowledge and insights with Yoga Journal.

And we want to extend our appreciation to you, our readers, for trusting us with your desire to further your understanding of yoga.

To commemorate our 50th anniversary, we compiled an in-depth look at what it was like to practice yoga in previous decades. How better to understand our present than to look back and appreciate what has changed, what has remained the same, and what could have been handled with more grace, clarity, and inclusivity?

We also launched our Archives series, a curated collection of articles dating back to 1975. Maybe you want to know how Ram Dass felt about psychedelics in the 80s or what it was like to spend a week practicing with B.K.S. Iyengar in India. Or perhaps you’re interested in the Eastern and Western approaches to intimacy? Or channeling a legendary Hindu goddess?

Throughout our 50th anniversary coverage, you can explore the ways in which yoga has been thought about, written about, and interpreted in past years—even as you remain present with your own experience of yoga today.
