Allow us to introduce you to our clairvoyant Choreographer of Austentatious, Greg Pember.

Greg is originally from Richmond, BC, where he started performing on stage at the age of nine and immediately fell in love with life in the theatre. He spent four years training at The Boston Conservatory, graduating with a B.F.A in Musical Theatre. Since then, Greg has had an extensive career as an actor/singer/dancer throughout the U.S. and Canada, performing Off-Broadway in NYC as well as on stages such as The Shaw Festival, The Stratford Festival, Theatre Calgary, The Citadel, Stage West and Drayton Entertainment.

With over 25 years of experience on stage, Greg is thrilled to now be diving deeper into the world of choreography and direction. He recently choreographed Something Rotten! For Storybook Theatre and The Shakespeare Company, earning him three nominations for Best Choreography (Betty Mitchell Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Broadway World Awards). Other choreography credits include Elf: The Musical, Honk! and Beauty & the Beast (Storybook Theatre) as well as being the Swing Dance Choreographer for Forgiveness at Theatre Calgary. Greg was the Assistant Director for Beaches the Musical at Theatre Calgary (under the direction of Tony-nominated Lonny Price and Matt Cowart) as well as the Assistant Director for Too Many Cooks at Stage West Calgary.

Thank you, Joe Slabe, for this incredible opportunity to work on this hilarious piece with these phenomenal performers.

⁣Bird of Paradise Flow 🌷⠀
Save this reel and practice scaffolding in the key actions of Bird of Paradise Pose (Svarga Dvijasana).⠀

This posture definitely falls into the category of “Peak Pose” and this sequence is designed to prepare your body for an exploration of Bird of Paradise, maybe with the help of a chair and/or a strap to make this pose more accessible.⠀

Before exploring the action of binding your hands behind you, I find it helpful to connect the backs of your hands in front of you (finding internal rotation at your shoulders) before reaching the hands forward and under your leg. Keep the reach of your arms to help your shoulder blades stay protracted until you can create the bind with your hands behind you.⠀

Save it, try it, teach it, share it and let me know what you think!
⁣Can yoga change the way we relate to our imperfections?⠀

To be human is to be flawed. So if our natural state is one of imperfection, how do we navigate our imperfections without the second arrow of judgement, shame and resentment?⠀

Shame, comparison and judgement come from a place of reactivity. Yoga and meditation help us to press pause on our unconscious, reactive mind.⠀

Yoga trains our bodies and minds to stay present within whatever arises moment to moment, instead of listening to and succumbing to our reactive minds, as we do pretty much all day, everyday.⠀

By noticing the impulse to react when practicing yoga and meditation, and choosing to stay with what we are doing and our felt experience of the moment, we decrease the power of our reactive mind and quiet the reactive need to judge ourselves and others.⠀

Our imperfections will never go away, but our judgement and shame around them can soften. It always starts with pausing, noticing and being with what is here, instead of reacting to it.⠀

What do YOU think? Can yoga help change our relationship with our “imperfections?”
Our 2024 Costa Rica Yoga Retreat was a beautiful week of jungle-living, meditation, community, journaling and asana.
