I don't know if it's because Rita was a woman, a fat woman, a woman with a facial difference or because she's everyone's grandmother's favourite, but too few people know that she was a badass voice for women's liberation in Canada. So much so that she was spied on by the government!
This isn't some conspiracy theory either. Declassified RCMP documents outline how she was secretly targeted by the government for her feminist activism.
When this came to light, Rita thought it was hilarious and that's unsurprising since she also made the most incredible cameo on the Trailer Park Boys 😂

I hate all the cheeky "Not Your Grandmother's XYZ" rhetoric because it's ageist bullshit. I also hate how young feminists assume every feminist older than them was Problematic™️ So yeah, Rita MacNeil had the voice of an angel and I know my Nana was a diehard fan. But Rita and women like her are why I get to live the life I have today and that should be better known.

I do NOT read contemporary romance as a general rule. I find the stories really contrived and I can't get into them. But I devoured Julie and Sierra's Christmas series and was delighted to see this book is in the same universe. But it's totally a stand alone book, too.
If you like very 🥵🌶️ romance with overt feminist themes, thick protagonists, great jokes and believable characters, this is your book. I really enjoyed it!
NO SPOILER but finishing this last night and reading about Steven Guilbeault today was a wild coincidence.
Finally, a shout-out to BookTok for making romance mainstream and in turn, incentivizing publishers to make the books pretty as hell now. I love a bodice ripping Fabio cover à la Harlequin in the 80s but I'm also loving the sprayed edges and beautiful illustrations these days!

Training 28,900 people over the course of 2 days is no small feat and I am *not* an early riser so that 6:30am call time was R O U G H 💀 But man oh man, the energy of thousands of people in the streets, hyped up and cheering for each other is really infectious.
It was miserable weather but I had enough yellow coats to see me through 😂 And between races when it wasn't raining, my personal photographer 📸 and I went to Minto Park where we played dice Catan. We also played this new game I got called "Art Robbery" that is a super fun little 2 person game. Highly recommend keeping travel size games in your purse at all times to lean into analog life.
Presenting in front of 10,000+ people at a time is always a wild experience but it's so satisfying to know that we're reaching the people who are so deeply affected by street harassment.
And my activist heart always soars seeing thousands and thousands of people taking to the streets.
My parents raised me on the notion that you have to earn the right to complain. Now you know that I've earned the right to talk shit because I do the damn work ✊🏻
This one hit somewhere in the middle for me. There were parts that stopped me dead in my tracks and made me reread a sentence over and over because it was so beautiful and powerful. And then other times, I found the disjointed, stream of consciousness format to not really work as well.
But this book did introduce me to Christian Wiman's poem and the powerful notion of coming to a truce that is not peace. And I'm really grateful for that.

It is D A R K and full of so many sharp observations about loneliness, misogyny, performative activism and life under late-stage capitalism.
If you read "We All Love the Beautiful Girls" or "Hausfrau" and thought "Man, this is fucked up and I should hate this but I can't put it down?" This book has the same energy.

Human beings are pack animals and being deprived of community while being told to fear thy neighbour is how we ended up in such a frayed society.
You can draw a through line from the "Spanish Flu" of 1918 to the rise of fascism and the genocide and eugenics of WWII. We have been here before and we'll only break the cycle by banding together, looking out for each other and challenging those who say they'll happily rise up against fascists but won't even wear a mask to protect their health and the health of their vulnerable community members.

I had to text the client at 4:45am (!!!) to say I was stranded. The absolute angel came to my rescue and got me to my first flight on time.

This was my book club's pick and I liked it just fine. It took me a while to get into it. It's ostensibly a book about a family of sisters and so it's meant to be character driven and it's not a short book. But the characters felt mostly one dimensional to me and some of the plot points made me roll my eyes.
Reviews talk about people bawling and I am a huge cry baby but it didn't get me.
TLDR: It was perfectly fine and readable but I don't get the hype!

Spent the morning talking about the complexity of resilience, and how we as a sector need to challenge our own beliefs that suffering builds character. Are we not in the business of trying to alleviate pain? Then we spent the afternoon talking about criminal harassment, and how we can better show up for victims/survivors in our communities.
Everyone was super delightful AND I GOT PICKED UP AT THE AIRPORT BY A LOVELY WORKER AND THE AGENCY'S EMOTIONAL SUPPORT PUPPY NAMED ALMA 😍 Look at that snoot!
They also gave me the loveliest bag of treats and remembered that I'm allergic to dairy and so got me vegan chocolates 😭🥹
This work is not easy, and I often have to navigate disrespectful clients not to mention disrespectful audience members. So, this was one of those dream experiences where the organizers took great care and I'm super grateful 💛
Gotta be up at 4 AM tomorrow for my flight home, so I won't have seen much of the community, but it was nice to wave at the Rockies. It had been a minute!✌🏻
