OPEN STUDIO | PORTES OUVERTES D’ATELIER
3 June 2026, Wednesday, 6–9pm
Studio #2213
Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris
18 Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, 75004 Paris

At the halfway mark of my residency at Cité Internationale des Arts, I am delighted to share work-in-progress experiments around scars, botanical debris, and the movement of plants across histories and bodies.

On view are new welded scar works, We do not scar within set boundaries (2026) — markings rupturing through the grids from which we first learn language, discipline, music, and order. These scarred surfaces consider the keloid scar not as defect, but as inheritance, social skin, memory, and trace.

Also in the studio are new drawings from Detritus Bouquets: Ginger (2026–), tracing ginger’s movement from Southeast Asia through trade, colonial expansion, labour, and migration. Wilted leaves, kitchen remnants, fallen botanicals, and rhizomes are re-arranged into bouquets carrying quieter histories of survival, displacement, and transformation.

I look forward to welcoming you into the studio!

On Residency in Paris
We are pleased to share that Yanyun Chen is currently undertaking an artist residency at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, as part of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts programme. Since early May, Chen has been developing a new body of work that will be presented in her yet to be announced solo exhibition at Sullivan+Strumpf Singapore in early 2027.

Request a catalogue of available works or register your interest in forthcoming exhibitions at the link in bio.

Through a multidisciplinary practice Chen explores time, memory, grief and the narratives carried by the body. With drawing at the centre of her practice, she considers how personal and inherited histories are registered through skin, surface and gesture.

Closing soon: Now in its final week, experience new works by Yanyun Chen in ‘For Want of (Not) Measuring’ at Spazju Kreattiv, Malta, until 03 May.

In this exhibition, Chen expands upon her Scars series, drawing from earlier bodies of work including 'Scars that write us' (2018) and 'Scar Writings' (2024) and presents a new series of welded scar works that critique notions of perfection, and social and hierarchical expectations.

‘We do not scar within set boundaries’ comprises 12 works on steel plates, where grid etchings of lines and dotted forms, often used for graph plotting, writing practice, 格子 (ge zi), 习字 (xi zi), or music composition, are disrupted by Chen’s unruly and aggressive scar welding, marks and traces that refuse containment.

Curated by Professor Vince Briffa and Alexander Zammit.
It is an incredible honour to show "Scars that write us"(2018) after 8 years at, and to be part of the Flesh and Bones Opening Symposium on the 21st of March 2026. We got to learn about the history of anatomical representations, as well as philosophies of Chinese Medicine, and the challenges of understanding the body from their contrasting differences. As Singapore moves towards embracing both Western and Chinese medicine on the level of policy, education, insurance, and health practices, the exhibition carves a site for dialogue, and find ways to bridge and build a common ground of understanding for their uneasy friendship and differing trajectories, while aiming for the same goals - good health.

Sharing a symposium with and Dr. Monique Kornell had my inner student (and inside voice) screaming with joy, and I found shared comfort and lots of giggles with and. Sending you both so much love! I wish I was teaching and could bring all my students, past and present, to see this exhibition about bodies. Another dream-come-true as a life drawing educator for the past decade! Other artists in the exhibition include, Bill Viola, Barbara Hammer, Solamalay Namasivayam and so many more! And I got to show on the big screen!

Thank you for opening the symposium with your thoughtful words, and for giving me an opportunity to share my work! So grateful for all the support all these years!

A huge thank you to the entire team at ArtScience Museum! Joel Chin Zhang Bao Xin Jorryn Ong Hariz Rosli Syahirah Razali Ashraff Bin Mohammad Firuz and so many more! Sending love your way! 💛

Her skin is uneven.

Keloids: a bulging, angry, redness that others want to touch before they see the body carrying the scar. She is hidden behind the remnants of a trauma, weighted by layers of family genetics, identified by an indelible mark which forgot to stop healing, growing, writing itself on her. Others refer to it as they refer to her being.

The scars that write us; we re-write our scars.

Telling stories is a form of embellishing gold on past pains. We revisit the site of trauma and offer new responses, reactions, and reconnect with what could have been a smooth, unblemished surface, before the hurt wrote itself onto our skin, our cells, our memories. We carry our scars as our genes carry our experiences; our pains are shared with our families because our bodies always remember. They remind us of that which we are, and the stories which they contain and reveal.

Jean-Luc Nancy reminds us that the world presses upon our skin as our bodies push back. We occupy a tangible space through our living and dying existence. How then do we respond to the writings of the world on our skin?

Our skin is uneven;
even then, we write ourselves on the world.

Expanding from Scars that write us (2018) and Scar Writings (2024) is a new series of welded scar works, critiquing notions of perfection, social and hierarchical expectations. 12 mild steel plates contain grid etchings of lined and dotted grids often used in graph plotting, writing practice, 格子(ge zi), 习字 (xi zi), music composition, etc. which were used in schools for learning. Over these grids are unruly, aggressive scar welding, marks and traces which refused to fit within set boxes and boundaries. It responds to the curators Vince Briffa and Alex Zammit’s call for spaces “between what is measured and what is actually experienced suggests that our understanding often emerges from uncertainty rather than precision,” and uplifts the beauty of lived experiences and scars against imprecise and fallible systems.

Curators: Professor and Assistant Curator

In attempting to understand the world through measurement, we often overlook how imprecise and fallible our systems really are. While numbers and metrics provide a framework for analysis, they frequently fail to capture the full complexity of lived experience. This gap between quantitative measurement and qualitative reality reveals itself in countless ways - from the limitations of pain scales in medicine to the inadequacy of standardised testing in education.

The space between what is measured and what is actually experienced suggests that our understanding often emerges from uncertainty rather than precision. When we acknowledge the limitations of quantification, we begin to see how measurement systems are useful tools rather than absolute truths. This recognition matters not just for scientific accuracy, but for how we approach knowledge and understanding across all fields - from data analysis to personal experience to artistic expression.
