Distributing a film worldwide right after a Japanese theatrical release, is almost without precedent for a Japanese movie, and was Netflix’s decision.
When making Hot Gimmick into a film, we added the subtitle, “Girl Meets Boy”. Typically love stories have been synonymous with “Boy Meets Girl”, but I tried the art of commentary on this by flipping it to “Girl Meets Boy”. I knew I had to make a new youth film to express, not love which steals independence, but helps understand one’s independence - if that exists in this world.
This film tells a fable of a lonely girl, and I’m awaiting the day it is delivered directly to girls around the world.
May we rise together, again and again.
