A lot of parents ask in workshops, how do I prevent my child from feeling all this grief and hurt? How do I make sure they’re whole and healed?”
If your adopted child never “gets over” or “fully heals” from the pain and wounds of their first loss, will you still love them?
Healing is never about a destination. We know this for so many losses. We know that healing is a non-linear process that is often lifelong.
Yet we often expect otherwise when it comes to adoption. When adoptive parents are preoccupied with a pinnacle moment of healing for adopted children it is sometimes self-centered. If my child reaches a desired destination of peace and total healing, then I will feel less guilty for my role in their pain and trauma. Sometimes adoptive parents use their child’s healing as a measuring stick for if they were a good adoptive parent or if they made the right decision to adopt. That is not our job. We are not mirrors for your self-worth. Our healing cannot absolve you of fear, regret, or guilt.
Adopted people need to be loved, accepted, celebrated even and especially when our adoption trauma requires ongoing healing. When our first experience of life was being left we need to know that in the “Even ifs…” you will still stay.
Even if we wish we weren’t adopted.
Even if our perception and experience of adoption is different than yours.
Even if we don’t get “better.”
Even if we’re never “fully healed.”
Even if … we need your love, support, respect, and loyalty. The greatest act of love you can give your adopted child is not seeking ways to prevent or avoid their pain, but to walk with them into and through it. To give them the guidance, resources, and unconditional love they need to process their pain in healthy and meaningful ways.

These workshops center foundational adoption/transracial adoption topics and provide participants opportunities to apply new skills and receive feedback that can set the stage for continued learning.
