I got this amazing coat (from The Superior Labor) which has all these pen slots in it, and it also has side pockets that can fit a trade paperback, so it’s basically perfect. Two weeks into wearing it, I had a pen disaster (featuring the Kaweco Al-Sport Piston) and now there’s a green stain on it, probably forever. Alt-Goldgrun. A metaphor for life. I don’t want to talk about it.
Life is full these days—and tense and bright and a slog and so sweet my teeth are aching with all the leftover Halloween candy. The kids have been keeping busy. Caleb has graduated from making breakfast for his sisters to more involved meals, like lunch, and it has been interesting to see his concept of a balanced meal. He’s not bad! I guess I’ll keep him. Naomi has joined a book club, and for one of their upcoming meetings we decided to try a new library that was, according to Google Maps, 28 minutes west of the shop, but ended up being 75 minutes due to a film shoot and a lot of traffic. An adventure. Junia has been wearing a lot of stripes.
More on the blog.
We’re open on Mondays now. Please come and say hello, we’re pumped and ready to discuss our favourite stationery items in detail.
Also: We have a tiny bit of construction going on in the front, with the ongoing Clinton Street construction, which you know we love 😅😭😟. Be careful! Don’t fall into any holes! We will rescue you if necessary.
Celina designed this cute book mark for anyone who either buys the book from us or attends the club. And there’s also a stamp! If you buy the book from us, our staff can stamp this into the inside of your book. I love the idea of a little, growing collection of books from a book club or other journey of reading you’re on, all together on a shelf.
But of course read it in any form: library, audio, e-book, used. Heaven forfend I leave out Amazon, but here we are, in this world, all of us doing the best we can. I shall not cast any stones for my aim is terrible and I’m likely to hurt myself.
And come out for an evening where we discuss Piranesi, this month’s pick, and maybe just books in general, and what we are reading, and how we are feeling about books these days. We will have snacks, we will be in our cosy little stationery shop, and we will enjoy the company and thoughts of other people who read books.
And even if you can’t make it, live too far, enjoy an introvert lifestyle, do not like the look of this month’s book, I hope you are still reading and mustering through difficult passages and flying through magical stories and considering new ideas, coming home from the library with your arms full and your brain cogs turning, filling up your cosy evenings with adventures of all sorts.
Anyone reading anything good these days?
We are celebrating these delightful tools of simple technology that are both practical and magical—the best combination possible. How satisfying to feel the pen on the page, when it’s flowing smoothly! What stories and images have been conjured in the meeting of pen and paper!
The accompanying tools of students and writers and wizards for many moons past, and here we are in the future, with our bright screens and our wandering attention spans, and still using these fountain pens in an effort to slow down, to find inspiration, to have a bit of joy. It’s hard to go back to ballpoints and gel pens after you begin the rituals of filling a pen from a bottle of ink, of feeling the liquid streaming out in dark, crisp, wet lines.
There is a fountain pen and ink and paper for everyone, and all the permutations to explore and get lost in. It’s part of the joy of it, the hunt for the right ink, the eager waiting for a new edition of a pen. But mostly it’s the comfort of the familiarity of pen that you’ve known for years and that will write for you just the way you like.
It’s been a while since I discovered fountain pens, or fountain pens discovered me, and it’s fair to say that they’ve changed my life. Who would I be without fountain pens? They are little soldiers awaiting their adventures from the comfort and jostle of my pen case, resting empty in my drawer, forlorn and lost in the bottom of my bag. Over these next few years, some of these may wander away from me, a gift or my own disorganization, but others I think will be my companions for life.
But I do love these stickers! Fresh in from Japan. Old designs restocked and new ones in as well. The extra large sheet feels luxurious and I love tucking a whole sheet into my Midori MD notebook for on the go writing. Planning, journalling, snail mail: stickers for everything.
I recently wrote a blog post on snail mail and how much I love it and how I took an unintentional hiatus from but I’m slowly immersing myself back into the postal world. Every once in a while we run a pen pal match up which is a lot of fun and a lot of work. 😅
We’re not quite geared up to run another pen pal match up but I thought in lieu of a match up, I would offer this post for anyone looking for a pen pal: leave a comment below with a bit about yourself or the kind of pen pal or human you are, and if you see someone else’s comment and you think you might be interested in writing to them, send them a DM to exchange addresses.
I’m hoping this works out! 💌📬📮
(Is Canada post going on strike? I don’t know! Is this bad timing? Classic Liz. But maybe even if CP does go on strike, we can be ready to welcome them back with some good energy mail in the bins.)
