so when this photo resurfaced, i had to share it.
i was walking home from fells when this couple cut through the noise of people walking by. they looked so intune with one another that even from the outside the world around them became insignificant and silent to the moment they were sharing.
although this photo pales in comparison, it was a beautiful reminder of all the couples I see around Baltimore in quiet moments that rarely get captured.
so I’m finding small ways to show it outside of ‘I love you’s’. like a check-in call to an old friend for a life update, cleaning for my mother unprompted because I know she’s stressed at work, and creating a safe space for a good friend who is feeling overwhelmed and not coping well. small things that had a bigger impact then i thought.
all that to say, I hope you feel loved.
The rustle of the leaves in the wind. The birds chirping. The soft hum of cars on the pavement and bicycle chimes.
I never noticed it when I wore headphones or let my mind only focus on my neverending to-do list.
And writing this makes me sound foreign to myself. I like load music, singing and dancing with missing rhythm.
Makes me curious when we decided distractions was normal. Or maybe its just a way to cope with life. But when was the last time you walked or sat somewhere public just being present where you are by choice?
You might end up like me finding comfort in the melody of Baltimore posting about it online. 🤣

As much as I'd like to say it was my choice, the truth is my headphones broke a couple months back and I had a neighborhood to walk the next day. Walking in silence made my skin crawl. But then I started hearing the birds chirping and watching the way sunlight colored the homes facades. somehow that made it easier to listen to my own thoughts in (mostly) silence.
So here's some bird sounds and some homes in Levindale to hopefully mimic the same moment for you.
after the pandemic, i used to google ‘how to speak to strangers’. i convinced myself i never had the right words anymore and lost the ability to connect. found myself scrolling for a script with footnotes as if connecting on a human level was a technical skill.
then i started walking neighborhoods and slowly they spoke to me.
in Union Square, I remember speaking to a man covered in tattoos walking home from taking his daughter to school. he told me he was released from jail yesterday going into detail about a wrongful charge with a smile plastered on his face. in the midst of my shock, he walked away waving saying he’ll see me again as if we were old friends.
a woman holding a garbage picker asking if I was taking photos of the squirrels. then learning she is a resident of Union Square for 25 years and has been picking up the trash for 5 of them. a known figure in the neighborhood she jokingly attributes to being the oldest.
and then there was a man who found his partner dead after 14 years together. before i could say or do anything to comfort him, his eyes smiled. remembering her lovingly, he said, ‘...she was the best woman I ever knew'. then told me he was heading to a community center he goes to that helps people with violent pasts have a brighter future.
this isn’t a lesson on ‘extracting information from people’ or idea that ’trauma dumping equals connection’. Just think we need space to share and someone willing to listen. and maybe they felt I needed that conversation just as much.
maybe there are no such thing as the ‘right words’.
Posting for posterity because i never thought taking photos of peoples homes from the sidewalk praying they didn't call the cops would lead to being invited in.
Spent a couple days in a home dating back to the 1800's with renovations and editions to today. Kind of surreal standing in history while its hopefully only the beginning of me being invited in and trusted with the most precious corners of someones life - their home.
