I had suggestions, saved spots and a loose idea of where I might go, but things didn’t quite go to plan.
So I put the list aside and walked where the light seemed to take me.
I knew time was precious, so I just sent it. No perfect route. No second attempt. Just getting myself locked in with the camera and framing whatever caught my eye.
Not really photographing Paris, exactly. More photographing this day, at this time, in that intense golden heat, and seeing what it revealed to me within the city.
And honestly, these kinds of situations often end up being some of my favourite ways to photograph.
No chasing “the shot”. No pressure for things to unfold a certain way. Just moving through a place with heightened attention, responding to what appears for a fraction of a second before it disappears again.
A reflection. Someone stepping into light. A shape. A pause. Heat bouncing from the streets. Small moments that probably mean nothing to most people, but briefly become enough to stop and make a photograph of.
I think that’s the part of photography I feel most connected to now.
Not necessarily arriving with a plan, but arriving open. Letting a place reveal itself slowly instead of trying to force it into an idea I already had before getting there.
Sometimes the most rewarding photographs come from the moments in between the plan.
The unexpected hours. The wrong turns. The exhausted walks. The light you almost missed because you were heading somewhere else.
A short walk through Paris.
And enough of a glimpse to know I have unfinished business with this city and my camera. merci, Gar

Landscapes might be your first thought when you think of Madeira, and for good reason, but I’ve always found the smaller moments just as interesting.
The in-between frames. The quieter details. The things you notice when you explore more of the island.

Mostly for a family holiday to Paris and Disney, but I’m hoping to find a little bit of time with my camera too. So if you know Paris well, I’d genuinely welcome a few suggestions.
These are a handful of photographs from different times I’ve found myself in France over the last few years.
For whatever reason, France has usually been somewhere I’ve passed through with a camera, rather than somewhere I’ve had time to properly settle into. I’ve driven through it on an automotive campaign, spent this time last year photographing a few famous faces at Cannes Film Festival, and around the same time had some photos from Mont Saint Michel published in Les Echos.
This is nowhere near a complete view of France. Not even a small part of it really. More a few brief glimpses from places I’ve found myself with a camera.
Maybe this next visit will be the nudge to come back properly and give Paris, or France more time and of course photos.
But for now, if there’s somewhere in Paris you think would really work for me and my camera, especially with very limited time, I’d love to read your suggestions.

Not in a romantic, everything is perfect sort of way. Just that things haven’t all moved at the same speed.
There are parts of life here that pull me back to childhood, to Wales as I remember it, to a slower and slightly rougher edged version of things.
Then I leave for work, travel, cities, projects, the internet, and it feels like rejoining the present again.
I don’t mean that in a negative way. I think I need both. But the contrast between the two has started to shape the way I photograph.
The big scenes will always mean a lot to me. The coastlines, the mountains, the weather, the light doing something ridiculous over the land.
But photography has never only been about finding the most spectacular thing.
There’s something to be said for spending time with the places around you. Not because they are always the most exciting or unfamiliar, but because you get to notice them in ways you can’t when you’re only passing through somewhere else. You see them in different light, different seasons, different moods. You start to understand what they give back when you keep showing up.
Sometimes it’s just about paying attention to the life you’re actually in.
I wanted to put together a few frames from the side of my life that exists between the times I’m somewhere else. The place I come back to. The place that slows me down. The place that has become a much bigger part of the picture than I think I realised.
Our photos show our movements, our journeys, the places we go and the lives we’re living along the way. And for me, there would be a big part missing if I didn’t share these kinds of moments too. Gar
A little closer to home for this one.
Just off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Skomer is one of those places that reminds you how much life exists right on the edge of where you live. This year, the island has recorded over 50,000 puffins, and for a few short months they return to land, filling the cliffs, paths and burrows with more character than seems fair for one bird to carry.
I’ve photographed Skomer before, but this time I had the 300mm GM with me.
I’ve always liked prime lenses. Not because they make life easier, exactly, but because they simplify the decision-making. You learn the frame. You start to feel the distance. You stop zooming your way out of every problem and begin moving, waiting, reading what’s in front of you.
The 300mm GM sits in a very different world to the 24mm and 50mm primes I usually reach for, but the feeling was familiar. A fixed point of view. A clear way of seeing. Just with enough reach to make sense of small, fast, characterful things moving through a much bigger landscape.
For puffins on Skomer, it felt like a lovely fit. Long enough to give them space, quick enough to keep up, light enough to carry around the island without feeling like the lens was becoming the whole day. And when the moments slowed down, the detail, sharpness and fall off gave the quieter frames a softness I really loved.
The puffins get the attention, and rightly so, but Skomer is more than one species. It’s sea, wind, cliffs, boats, rabbits, flowers, research huts, waiting, watching, and that familiar feeling of being reminded how much there is to see close to home.
A small island, thousands of birds, and another reminder that some of the best stories are still right here in Wales. thanks, Gar

I’m heading into London tomorrow for something I’m looking forward to, so it felt right to share a collection from previous walks through the city.
I don’t spend a huge amount of time in London. I’m Welsh, grew up in Wales, and these days I’m very much at home in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, usually happiest somewhere between the coast, the woods and the hills.
And when I do leave, it’s often further afield. Potentially somewhere very exciting and new to me soon too.
But the photographer in me does love a city. The older the better, really.
London gives you so much to look at. Old buildings beside new ones. People moving through light. Small details inside huge scenes. Reflections, shadows, colour, scale and little moments that appear and disappear before you’ve fully understood them.
There is so much to frame, and sometimes that means reaching for whatever camera is closest, even if it’s just the phone in your pocket. The Underground frame in this set was one of those.
It’s a very different kind of walking to the one I’m used to, but I often come away with the same feeling.
There is always another photograph somewhere.

But really, my interest is photography first. The places it takes me, and the way it changes depending on where I am.
Sometimes that’s a mountain or a coastline. Sometimes it’s an old city full of colour, history, texture, tiled walls, passing people and small moments that ask you to slow down.
Lisbon is one of those places I keep returning to through my archives. Every time I do, I feel the pull to go back.
There’s always that balance with travel. New places calling, old places asking for another look, and never quite enough time for all of it.

Madeira is a place that invites you to slow down. To respond to light, weather, and moments as they unfold.
This is a six day photographic trip hosted by me with Inspired Ventures, designed for a small group of photographers who want to shoot, grow, share, and enjoy the process. This trip is an opportunity to spend meaningful time photographing alongside others who share the same passion for the craft. To be out in the world together, responding to light, landscape, and moments as they unfold, in a place that lends itself beautifully to that way of working.
Early November is quieter and ideal for exploring the island as conditions change, with space to chase light and also appreciate the in-between moments.
The first place has already been booked via my broadcast channel. A minimum of six people is required for the trip to go ahead, and places are limited.

I’ll also host a couple of relaxed online calls in the lead-up, giving us space to talk through ideas, answer questions, and share thoughts around photography, approach, and preparation.
