Beech woods can feel strangely empty underneath… and that’s partly intentional.

Beech trees cast such deep shade that very little can grow below them, and the thick layer of slowly decomposing leaves makes it even harder for other plants to establish. At the same time, connected underground fungal networks can allow neighbouring beeches to share nutrients and resources with one another.

A beech woodland might look calm, but it’s a pretty ruthless system.

Most people walk past this little flower without noticing it… but Bird’s-foot Trefoil can actually improve the soil beneath it by pulling nitrogen from the atmosphere through a partnership with bacteria underground.

Also known as ā€œeggs and baconā€ because of its yellow and orange flowers, it’s one of the most important wildflowers for bees and butterflies in the UK.

This is a plant that you probably see all the time at this time of year because it’s producing these beautiful little blue flowers. But green alkanet can also be a bit of a problem for gardeners! Although the pollinators love it, it spreads prolifically over disturbed ground. #plants #wildplants #nature #bushcraft
Miner? I hardly know her!
There are lots of different species of miner bees all living in different environments. In my old childhood home we had a group which lived in a cement wall and sometimes we spot them in sandy warm areas like sand dunes. They’re solitary and very docile and, seeing as this week was world bee day, I thought this was an apt video! #bee #bees #nature #scotland
For photo Friday I thought I’d post this young badger from last week. A neighbour had said that she’d heard some noise under her shed and would I find out what it was. Well, turns out it’s this wee guy/girl. It seems there’s only one living under there at the moment so it’s probably a youngster that’s been turfed out of the family sett and is yet to set up shop somewhere more permanent. I’ll definitely be back out to photograph him again! Lil cutie! #badger #wildlife #scotland #nature
Have you ever heard of ā€œanthocyaninsā€? The pigmentation in loads of plants is caused by them but we can use them to help us orientate ourselves when we’re out walking in the woods. Even if we don’t use them to nav, it’s a fun little thing to notice nonetheless! #brambles #bushcraft #nature #scotland
HELLO! I thought it might be time to introduce myself to new followers…

My name’s Will Hall and those three words in my bio are kind of my focus in life - Wildlife, Travel and Adventure. I spend my time in a variety of roles: instructor, naturalist, guide photographer, filmmaker, Army Reserve Officer, firefighter among other things.

My background is originally in animal biology but in recent years I’ve branched out into bushcraft and survival skills. I aim to bring natural knowledge to a wider audience and hopefully inspire a new generation of young people into environmental education.

If you’re new here, welcome! Don’t be a stranger and I really hope you enjoy the videos & photos I produce!
Even the most common of plants can be interesting. You can use daisies as a natural compass even when the sun is hidden behind cloud as they follow the brightest part of the skies #naturalnavigation #bushcraft #nature #plants
Tulips are known for their beauty but they’re also a reminder of a very sad tale… #folklore #myth #nature #scotland
