About 11 days ago, this little fella came into my life after I endured a miserable year and a half without a dog and so far, we are inseparable and best buddies. Like Scotch, he’s a Brittany but is liver roan instead of the orange roan Scotch was. He’s still getting used to his new surroundings but he’s already made a lot of doggy friends and is having a blast. While he may never hunt since I’m not a hunter, this guy will have a lifetime of adventures exploring the country with me and I couldn’t be happier about it. He’s only 11 months old right now but if I get 14 wonderful years with him like I did with Scotch, I’ll consider myself a very lucky person.

As many of you may have noticed, my posts here basically came to a halt over the last 6 or so months and in part was due to the unhappiness of not having a dog around anymore. The first 12 years with Scotch were extremely happy times for me, with a canine friend who wanted to spend every minute of the day playing with me and traveling all over to shoot photographs, chase birds, swim and just explore. His last 2 years in Los Angeles very tough for both of us as his health deteriorated at an alarmingly fast pace. For about 6 months following his passing, I had a hard time being around any dog and when I finally felt ready to adopt another Brittany, I met one obstacle after another which compounded my misery and I’d basically had given up on finding another dog when I came across this guy.

The primary reason photography became my primary hobby in the first place was due to my adventures with Scotch and he was right there with me the entire time as I taught myself manual photography while we went swimming, chased sunsets down dirt and roads in the countryside all over the east coast and when he ultimately become my primary portrait model as he got older. Without him, the joys of photography slowly disappeared. I’m looking forward to sharing my new adventures with Guinness with all of you! This was from our first photoshoot a few days ago 😊
This is another sunset shot from about 3 weeks ago down at Venice Pier and shot vertically. When I shoot these reflective sunset scenes, I prefer to use a slightly slower exposure to help clean up any unpredictable movement but when the incoming surf is interesting like this, I try to adjust my settings to use a much quicker exposure to minimize blur. I find it challenging to get the shutter as fast as I like without compromising all the settings sometimes since it’s hard to guess on water movement and while I like the foreground here, would’ve prefer a slightly quicker shutter. A slight bump in ISO would’ve allowed me to keep the aperture the same while significantly increasing shutter speed. Regardless of this, it was still a very beautiful sky and nice evening of shooting.

I shot this several weeks ago while the sun was dipping to the horizon out at sea, as the colors began to pop a bit more. I was using full manual and shifting settings in small increments trying to find a sweet spot for the sun and shooting in burst to try and alternate between a reflective shore and interesting incoming surf. I primarily use a 16-35mm lens for this view but always wish it was easier to switch to my 70-200mm when the sun looks like this so I can get a few closeups of the horizon. The amount of time from when the sun visible to out of sight is so short and I have no interest rushing possibly dropping one lens or the other onto the wet sandy shore in the dark. I learned photography using a mediocre 18-135mm kit lens many years ago and while it was barely a fraction of the quality of my current lenses, I do miss the extreme versatility it offered. This was as might imagine, a pretty chilly evening but definitely glad I was there.

I shot this back in January when one of my oldest friends from home was visiting me while also seeing LA for the first time. It gave me a chance to go back to some of the places I loved to photograph prior to moving to the beach including the Hollywood Bowl Overlook. We arrived late afternoon on a very cloudy day with intermittent light rain and from past experiences, it seemed worth waiting for sundown even if this specific view isn’t ideal for the sunset which is back and to my right from this position. She told me she both wanted photos of her and also that she hates being in photos so I treated her as a hostile model and was happy when a bunch turned out well. This pose was organic and was always exactly how I felt up here when I needed an escape from gross Hollywood. I shot this vertically and mixed up the aperture a lot to get her with varying degrees of blur and clarity in the background but this was in the middle range so the cityscape would be identifiable while keeping her the primary subject.

I shot this a few nights ago in my usual spot to the right of Venice pier. I haven’t had the best luck of late with my timing and it seems I generally have missed the good cloudy sunsets while showing up for sub par skies and color but I got what I wanted this evening. The sand was still damp from earlier rain and the water was extremely cold but I enjoyed it nonetheless and was pretty happy to have some new images to share. I was also glad I avoided getting rained on.

I shot this a couple Saturdays ago when my good friend who I’ve known for nearly a decade and a half came to visit and I got to play tour guide. Despite spending a tremendous amount of time at the Hollywood bowl overlook when I lived less than a mile from here for 2 years, I hadn’t actually been back to this spot since I moved. I rarely found myself wanting or needing to be in Hollywood and afternoon traffic can be horrible but it’s a location that all people who’ve never been here should see. We got lucky and only had to wait a few minutes for one of the handful of parking spots to open and got an amazingly cloudy day with very little haze. It was late afternoon and the sunset was being to the far right of the shot. The bright foreground and the strip of light in front of the high rises are from the sunlight bleeding through the clouds. Even though this is not an ideal sunset spot due to the difficulty and obscured views to the West, you still get some great color from here on the right days. As a side note, I think that giant yellow crane has been in every single photo I’ve shot from here since I began coming to this overlook in early 2016.

One of my oldest friends from pre California came to visit me for a long weekend and this was the sunset we got on her last evening here yesterday down at Venice beach. She’d never been to LA and it had been a bit over 4 years since we last saw eachother so it was really great to catch up on everything over that period and give me an excuse to play tour guide here. A few evenings ago I went back to Hollywood Bowl Overlook for the first time since moving to Venice and got amazing conditions both for shooting and also for taking it all in. A few days prior, we drove down the PCH eventually made our way up one of the canyon roads that turned out to be a major point from the wildfires which was incredibly surreal. The road snaked through scotched earth and trees and I hadn’t seen any of this in person, just from the news coverage when it was happening. Last night, we had just enough time to head to the pier and got to see a perfect winter LA sunset. All I brought was my camera and my 70-200mm lens so I shot a sunset in full manual, handheld (no tripod) for the first time since I began photography. I’ve literally used a tripod and remote shutter for ALL previous outdoor shooting. Results were better than I expected despite the challenges of lower light. To get the shots exposed how I wanted, it took higher apertures, higher shutter speeds and a bump in ISO. It was the perfect culmination to a really great weekend 🙂

I shot this back in May during a nice pink sunset which tend to be my favorite out here in part because they seem to appear out of nowhere. For whatever reason, I used to be able to tell with some certainty from conditions leading to the sunset that this sort of setting would occur but it’s been so long and infrequent, I can’t remember what generally tipped me off. Either way, color like this appears after the sun goes down and is relatively brief but pretty amazing to see when it does happen. I missed the last big orange/red/pink sunset back in December and still kick myself for it. I don’t think there’s been a decent sunset in almost a month.

I shot this a little over a year ago in mid December of 2017 on what turned out to be a pretty amazing evening at the beach. This was just a few weeks after replacing my all purpose 18-135mm lens with the 16-35mm and only a couple days after finally upgrading my camera body body and I lucked out with some tremendous conditions in Venice to practice on. I had also just gotten a very heavy duty set of carbon tripod legs so I could keep my good tripod setup away from the sand and ocean air. At the time, all the camera stuff was a welcome distraction from Scotch’s rapidly declining health. Despite living in an amazing place right next to the ocean, 2018 was a year I’d gladly love to forget completely and I’m glad the year is finally over. Happy new year to everyone and I hope 2019 is treat for all of you.

Here’s another shot from a very symmetrical low tide evening at Venice beach from a little more than a month ago. I’ve now officially been in LA for 3 full years and during that time, I’ve come to realize that winter is basically the one time during the year you can expect great sunsets. This particular winter has been a disappointment so far and there haven’t been many sunsets that excite me. The times I’ve gone down to the beach to shoot have ended up being a waste while a few that I missed pained me to see through the living room window. It was around this time last year that conditions started to consistently yield incredible sunsets that still seem fresh in my mind and I hope that trend continues. I have tons of photos I haven’t shared from my archives but for my own sanity, I need to shoot more...whether it’s portrait work or beach sunsets.
