We’ve been buried in snow and it’s made it nearly impossible to go winter RVing safely.
So instead, we’re living in last summer (which is when we first posted this reel). What do you think of our hitching up process?

Before we get down to it:
📌 SAVE this for your Tofino trip! AND
🏕️ SEND this to the person you want to visit with!
Winter in Tofino and Ucluelet offers so much! A big plus is fewer people and cheaper accommodations, so your budget can go further. Here are some of the many things to do in Tofino during the off season:
🚐 Camp/RV year round: We stayed the winter at and it was the best experience! Southern Vancouver Island and the coast is mild enough to comfortably stay in your RV without having to take any extreme winter precautions.
Of course, Tofino also has many hotels, AirBnBs, and resorts to stay at as well.
🥾Hiking: Tofino, Ucluelet, and Pacific Rim National Park is absolutely loaded with incredible hiking. Our favourites include:
✨Cox Bay Lookout
✨Lighthouse Loop, Wild Pacific Trail
✨Rainforest Trail A & B
✨Combers Beach Trail
🚤 Water Taxi over to Meares Island and hike the Big Tree Trail. Walk amongst some of BC’s last remaining old growth forest and admire the enormity of the giant cedars. Meares Island is protected land as a tribal park and maintained by the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation.
🏄🏽♀️ Surfing: Did you know winter is actually the best time for surfing? The waves are much more active and this is the most common time for real-deal surfers to be in the water. If you enjoy surfing, get yourself to Tofino in the winter. Rentals can be booked at
🚣🏻 Paddling: While rentals may not be available in the off-season, if you have your own kayak or canoe, we HIGHLY recommend getting out for a paddle. Ucluelet is a great spot for this as there are more protected inlets to explore than Tofino. We enjoyed paddling out from the Harbour, as well as from Little Beach.
🍴Food: So much good food! It’s honestly difficult to find food you won’t enjoy in the area. Just a few of our favourites (it’s honestly TOO HARD to choose):
Oh, and don’t forget your post-hike bevy at
Moral of this post? Don’t sleep on Tofino in the winter!

We definitely have, especially when we’re trying to hitch up in a hurry. Our number one piece of advice is to always TAKE YOUR TIME and consider using an actual checklist. Hitching up in a hurry never ends well 🫣

Our rig is a 2010 K-Z Durango 275 fifth wheel that we renovated top to bottom. We spent summer 2021 overhauling this dated interior and we love our modern apartment on wheels!

If you’re new here, we’re Laura and Joel. 👋 We are Canadian RVers who sold it all and took off in our renovated fifth wheel back in 2021 to explore Canada and find more meaning in life. We’ve been through it all during our travels!
Last fall, we became first time parents and settled down a bit, but we’re back in the RV learning how to travel with a little one and sharing it all with you! Thanks so much for being here!

It’s been a while since we introduced ourselves, so let’s start with some fun facts!
1️⃣ We have explored 9 of 10 provinces. Only Newfoundland is left, and we’re excited to get our rig onto the ferry to explore. We also plan to visit the territories over the next few years, though Nunavut does not have access roads, so the rig will have to stay home for that adventure.
2️⃣ Joel’s first love is music - he’s a multi-instrumentalist and records, mixes, and masters all his own tracks!
3️⃣ Laura’s first love is farming and homesteading. She lived on an organic farm for a season after uni to learn about sustainable farming practices, growing food and caring for the animals.
4️⃣ Our dog, Stella, is a blue heeler/border collie mix. She never sits still and insists on bringing home a souvenir stick from every camping spot.
5️⃣ Our rig is almost 15 years old, but we renovated it top to bottom before hitting the road so it feels like a modern apartment on wheels.
✨OUR STORY✨
We’re Laura and Joel. We’ve been together since 2016 and first went full time in our renovated RV in the Fall of 2021. We immediately headed west to spend the winter on Vancouver Island where it’s a little milder for RV living.
Family illness sent us home to Ontario that spring, where we lived the stationary life in the RV for a while. We got married in June 2022 and had the most amazing wedding with family and friends. We hunkered down for another winter, this time in Southern Ontario (a MUCH different winter experience than Tofino).
We found ourselves expecting our little one in the new year! We were excited, but I (Laura) was particularly uninterested in doing another harsh winter in the RV with a newborn, and we also didn’t want to be away from family during this time by traveling to warmer climates. We found a home base to settle down while we welcomed our daughter in Fall 2023.
