Van Region, Eastern Anatolia
ca. 1925–1935
205 × 167 cm
This Herki kilim was woven in the Van region in the early decades of the 20th century — a landscape shaped by mountains, movement, and the need for protection.
It is an iki kanatlı kilim, woven on a narrow loom in two separate panels and later sewn together. One wing is slightly longer than the other.
I’ve always loved pieces with different wings. They feel alive. Less resolved. More honest. As if the weaving was allowed to follow life instead of forcing symmetry.
The composition is bold and grounded. Large diamond forms hold the field with quiet confidence — not decorative, but stabilising. Lines of Su Yolu, running water, move through the weave, carrying a sense of continuity and trust in life’s flow.
Protective symbols appear throughout the kilim. Göz, the eye, watches over the household. Kurt Ağızı, the wolf’s mouth, guards its boundaries. Yıldız, the star, offers orientation — a reminder that guidance exists even when the path is not clear.
There is a strong feminine presence in this piece. Elibelinde speaks of fertility, creative power, and self-trust. Küpe, the earring, carries wishes of love, dignity, and belonging. The rhythm of Tarak motifs recalls skilled hands at work — ordering, shaping, creating. Balancing this energy, Koç Boynuzu, the ram’s horn, brings strength, vitality, and protection into the composition.
The palette is deep and earthy — iron reds, brick, aubergine, softened greens, warm ivory. Naturally aged. Calm. The wool is hand-spun, durable, and alive to the touch.
The visible seam is part of the story. It marks pauses, decisions, continuation.
Time made visible in wool.
This kilim was woven for daily life — to be walked on, lived with, relied on.
It still carries that purpose.
One of a kind.
Early 20th century Anatolian weaving, fully present.

A kilim is not repaired to erase time,
but to carry it forward.

Every thread is considered.
Nothing rushed. Nothing forced.
This is how a kilim stays alive.
West Anatolia · Mid 20th century
205 × 125 cm
A village kilim woven for everyday life.
Stripes move across the loom like days unfolding.
Running through it is Su Yolu — the waterway, a quiet symbol of flow and continuity. Between the stripes appear Göz and Nazarlık for protection, Çengel for connection, Pıtrak for resilience, and Küpe — a small feminine gesture of love and belonging, stitched in cicim embroidery.
The colours are warm and grounded — madder reds, saffron, walnut brown, softened naturally over time.

Before there was separation,
there was the womb.
Dark.
Warm.
Holding.
This kilim was woven from that memory.
The field unfolds through repeating diamonds - opening like a body, again and again. Not as decoration, but as a remembering. Of birth. Of return. Of a knowledge that was never written down, only carried in the body and passed through hands.
At the centre rests the sign of the womb. Not an image, but a state. A space where life is formed, held, released - only to return once more. The rhythm of the weave mirrors the rhythm of breath, contraction and expansion, arrival and departure.
Here, the goddess does not appear as a figure. She appears as structure. As order. As repetition. As cyclical time itself.
Below — the origin.
At the centre — the holding.
Above — the soft return into the Great Mother.
Woven as a burial kilim, this piece marks passage not as an ending, but as a homecoming. The floral motifs along the border are not ornament, but gesture - an ancient act of care, honouring the body as it dissolves back into the womb of the earth.
This kilim does not lie between life and death.
It rests in the womb between -
where all things begin,
and where all things return.
