FACULTY FRIDAY
Meet Assistant Professor of Biology Jenny Onley ’11, Ph.D., a Whitworth alumna who has returned to join the faculty! She teaches courses such as Medical Microbiology and Bacterial Pathogenesis.

Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?
A. When I was an undergraduate student at Whitworth University, my microbiology professor taught us about microorganisms that are important in transforming carbon, nitrogen and other nutrients in the environment. When I learned that microbes can break down waste and even help us clean up uranium spills, I knew I wanted to spend my career studying and applying microbiology to important human and environmental issues.

Q. Tell us about a fun class you teach.
A. I teach Medical Microbiology, where students learn about the bacteria, fungi and viruses that make us sick. In the lab, we learn many tests for identifying microbes, and then we use those skills to identify a mix of unknown bacteria (unknown to the student, that is!). It is fun to synthesize what we learn and apply it in a way that is analogous to what occurs in hospital labs with patient samples.

Q. What advice would you give to a student who’s interested in studying biology at Whitworth?
A. Be intentional about your future plans, but remain flexible as well. There are so many different directions that a degree in biology can take you (medicine, veterinary, research, teaching, clinical labs, etc.). It is OK to change your mind or to use your degree in nontraditional ways. God has a purpose for your life!

JUST FOR FUN...

Q. What’s the most interesting or unusual item in your office?
A. A cross-stitched image of microbes, made by my husband.

Q. What’s your favorite spot on campus?
A. The garden behind Johnston Science Center, because it has my favorite tree – a weeping cherry blossom tree!

Q. Tell us about your pet.
A. I have a grouchy cat named Jack.

Q. What artists or musical genre do you play when you need a pick-me-up?
A. Stevie Wonder.
The accomplishments of the Whitworth Forensics Team under Director and Professor Mike Ingram speak for themselves: More than a dozen national championship wins in recent years. Over 3,400 individual student speech and debate awards.

What those impressive stats don’t convey, though, is the immeasurable impact “Coach” has had on his students across 24 seasons. As Ingram prepares to hang up his stopwatch and retire this spring, we asked alumni to reflect on their favorite memories of Ingram and the difference he made in their lives. Read their heartfelt responses at look.whitworth.edu (link in bio).

Plus, look for a feature on the forensics program in the next issue of “Whitworth Today” magazine, available in June!

What Is It Like? | Engineering

Colby Cinqmars ’26, a soon-to-be grad who plans to begin a Ph.D. program in aerospace & mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona this fall, shares about majoring in engineering at Whitworth:

“I have always been curious about the world around me and how it works. … I chose to study engineering because I have never been satisfied with simply accepting that something works. I want to understand why it works. Engineering and physics provide the tools to explore those questions and uncover the concepts that shape the world around us.

“A unique experience I have had was a summer research internship with Professor Kamesh Sankaran. Along with a fellow student, I computationally investigated the behavior and operation of inductive pulsed plasma thrusters, an alternative propulsion system suited for the growing demands of space exploration, including missions to Mars and beyond. As part of this work, I had the opportunity to attend two conferences, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and contribute to a published paper. This experience was truly life-changing. Not only was my advisor incredibly supportive, but the STEM summer research environment at Whitworth is something I would strongly encourage any interested student to pursue.

“One of the joys of attending a small school like Whitworth is the opportunity to build close relationships with classmates and professors. For anyone considering a major in engineering or physics, I would encourage you to take full advantage of that environment. Do not be afraid to reach out, talk with your peers and attend office hours. It can be surprising how much you learn simply through conversations with others. Those interactions not only deepen your understanding of the material but also help you develop relationships that might last a lifetime.”
One step closer to the big day! At the Senior Celebration last week, our soon-to-be grads picked up their commencement regalia at Hawthorne House while enjoying food, friends and a photo booth (a gallery link will be sent to students via Pirate Port soon).

We’re looking forward to seeing our seniors and their families at commencement in less than two weeks!
A message from President McQuilkin and your incoming and outgoing ASWU presidents as we get set for final exams, commencement for many, and a well-earned summer of rest and renewal.
Whitworth’s jazz students shared their innovative artistic expression at the annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival last week, once again leaving on a high
note! The Whitworth Jazz Orchestra was named the winner of the College Instrumental Large Ensemble Division at the University of Idaho festival, the largest of its kind in the West.

Whitworth musicians also earned top honors in two additional categories. In the College Instrumental Combo Division, the Infinity Jazz Combo won
first place, while the Speak No Evil Jazz Combo earned runner-up honors. In the Solo Division, Christopher Rodriguez-Chen ’28 (tenor saxophone) won first place, and Will Strauch ’28 (trombone) was named runner-up.

Way to go everyone!
The decision has been made! We are absolutely thrilled to officially welcome incoming students to the Whitworth family! You’ve locked in your spot, and now the countdown to Move-In Day begins. Get ready for an incredible journey – we’ll see you on campus soon! #WhitworthBound #DecisionDay #Classof2030
FACULTY FRIDAY

Meet Anna Penner, Whitworth’s new visiting assistant professor of sociology, who teaches courses such as Sociology of Gender, Sociology of Health & Disability, and Sociology of Marriage.

Q. What drew you to your academic discipline?
A. As a third culture kid, I was always curious why different cultures valued different ideals. In sociology, I get to study why people do what they do and how to make changes to benefit those on the margins of society.

Q. Tell us about a fun class you teach.
A. I try to make all my courses as fun as possible, even statistics. Some activities in that course include learning about sampling by eating Skittles or M&Ms, playing Charty Party (which is a game like Apples to Apples but with charts) to learn about types of variables, or competing with classmates to learn about two-sample t-tests. I know most of that sounds like gibberish, which is why I try to make it as engaging as possible.

Q. What advice would you give to a student who’s interested in studying sociology at Whitworth?
A. I would suggest getting started on the statistics and research methods courses as soon as possible and then joining a professor on a research project. A lot of great learning happens in the classroom, but there is nothing like mentorship in research!

JUST FOR FUN…

Q. What might your students be surprised to learn about you?
A. I used to ride a motorcycle.

Q. What’s the most unusual item in your office?
A. An archery target that I use to engage my statistics students in active learning (we use bean bags, though, not bows and arrows!).

Q. What’s your go-to podcast?
A. “The Tennis Podcast.”

Q. If you could spend a day as any fictional character, who would it be?
A. As a mom of young kids, I’d be thrilled to be Sleeping Beauty for a day. But without a prince coming to wake me up! Just as much sleep as possible.
