Greenslate Community Farm is a farm on the side of Billinge Hill, near Wigan.

It’s not an all singing all dancing visitor attraction. Instead it has a much more community feel as you walk around the grounds.

It does have;

🥾A café
🥾A pre-loved shop
🥾A small number of animals
🥾A play area
🥾A woodlands to explore
🥾Fresh eggs to buy
🥾Home grown vegetables for sale
🥾Sponsor an animal

What makes Greenslate community farm special is that it is a community farm ran by staff and volunteers.

It also offers a range of opportunities to people with special needs. It provides the chance for them to learn and be part of a team. The work can be helping around the farm, looking after the animals or even helping in the café. It’s such a brilliant initiative that provides life skills to people who may not get that opportunity elsewhere.

It’s a lovely way to spend an hour or two. So, go and visit, spend in the café or shop, offer a donation or buy some animal food to help this brilliant place keep going.

Worden Park - Leyland

We wrapped up today and went for a
walk around Worden Park.

This is one of those places where there is something different to see around every
corner.

🥾free parking which is always a bonus
🥾large play area
🥾 miniature railway - this wasn’t open today
🥾miniature golf - that was also closed and I’m not sure if it’s due to reopen as it looked a bit over grown
🥾A maze - there’s three false entrances so we struggled to even get in here 🤣. We did get in and thankfully the hedges were a bit bare so we could find our way out. In full bloom I’d probably still be trapped in there
🥾Formal gardens - you’d need to come in the summer to see these in all their glory
🥾walled garden - couldn’t find this but my fingers were like ice by this point
🥾ancient icehouse where they used to store, well, ice 🤣. Tried to peer in. It looked creepy so moved on.
🥾Shaw woods & folly. This is a lovely wooded walk with decent paths and a folly with a little water fall
🥾The folly coffee house is there for drinks and a bite to eat.
🥾 toilets are 20p if you use the ones in the car park or free if you go to the ones near the cafe

Great place for a walk to blow the cobwebs away.

Have you heard of the millenium walkway in New Mills? It was built to create a route through an impassable gorge. It really is as spectacular as it sounds.

It’s a 160m suspended bridge through a gritstone gorge that hangs above the River Goyt. Before this walkway this section of the gorge was impassable.

When you’ve gazed in amazement at the bridge and realised you are literally standing below a town, there’s still lots to do here.

You can also see;
⭐️visit an old mill that’s been converted into a restaurant and bar
⭐️ visit where you can buy cheese, natural wine and craft beer that’s brewed in New Mills itself
⭐️ visit Torrs riverside nature reserve and explore the gorge
⭐️visit the Torr hydro. The Torr Hydro is a brilliant piece of engineering that creates a huge amount of electricity from the power of the river.

We parked in Torrs Top street car park. There’s a steep path on the right that leads down to the millennium walk way.

A candle light concert with a string quartet and classical singers, was an absolutely perfect night.

The setting of in Liverpool was stunning and the music was phenomenal. So good they didn’t even use microphones.

If you’ve never heard classical music live, this is definitely something to put on your list of things to do. You’ll be blown away by the talent.

It was an hour of traditional carols and movie favourites and guided you through the night with little snippets of information about the pieces they were about to play.

In the midst of all the Christmas madness this was a brilliant evening to find a bit of calm.

Deck The Barn Carol Concert- Warrington

If you’re looking for a Carol concert with a difference you’ll love Deck the Barn at Bates Farm.

Set in a working farm, the barn was decorated with hay bales, Christmas trees and twinkling lights, ready for an hour of pure fun.

The carol concert is a carol concert with a twist. It’s led by the Gospel touch choir. They were absolutely superb, there was a gospel twist to the Christmas songs and even a bit of Motown thrown in.

Audience participation was an absolute must, so be prepared to be up singing and dancing if you come here.

Liverpool Winter Festival has arrived in Liverpool.

It’s on the pier head and directly in front of the Liver building.

There’s fairground attractions, food stalls, a Bavarian bar, cosy tipis and so many places to grab a hot chocolate.

They even have cherry mulled wine which is definitely worth trying. (I’m not normally a mulled wine lover but this was lovely)

You may even spot Father Christmas or the Grinch walking around.

But, you can’t come here and not go ice skating. It’s so much fun.

All the staff were so lovely and friendly, the whole place had a gorgeous festive atmosphere.

Downham Village - Lancashire

If you’re looking for a quintessential English village, Downham is the place.

It lies at the foot of Pendle Hill and is close to Clitheroe, but it feels like its own little world that has stepped back in time.

It’s often called the most beautiful village in Lancashire and when you arrive you can see why. It’s surrounded by gorgeous countryside, a brook runs through the middle, stone houses, a village hall and a church with a 15th century tower.

It’s also the location of the film ‘whistle down the wind’. Although, more significantly, it’s also associated with one of the most infamous witches from the Pendle witch trials.

We didn’t see another person when we were there, which did make it feel a bit eerie.

It’s a beautiful village to have a walk around. It has a pub, a post office and a bit further along an ice cream shop.

It does have a small car park and toilets are located there.

Mersey Ferries can be easy to overlook if you come to Liverpool for a day out or even if you live here.
But, this is a sign to go on a Mersey Ferry explorer trip. It’s a 50 minute cruise up the Mersey. You can admire the skyline and listen to the commentary about all the buildings you can see.

It’s a brilliant way to spend some time that finishes with a sing along to Ferry across the Mersey.

It’s so close to the Museum of Liverpool, the Liver buildings and the Albert Dock.

It was such a gloomy day when we went on the ferry but we still thoroughly enjoyed it.
It this isn’t on your list for a visit to Liverpool you need to add it.

Petit Cafe - Lark Lane
If you’ve been here a while you’ll know I love a hot chocolate.

So, when I heard about the Parisian hot chocolate in Lark Lane it was only a matter of time until I visited. 🤣

This is a top tier hot chocolate.
☕️Dark chooclate
☕️Double cream

It’s rich and basically a dessert as well as a drink. You get a JUG of cream to add yourself. Instant winner for that alone.

It’s not served boiling hot more warm, which is even better for me as I’m not a fan of hot hot drinks.

10/10 thoroughly enjoyed it and the staff were all so lovely too. It really does feel like you e popped to Paris.

They also had a range of wines and cocktails and have a timetable of jazz evenings.

The Lady of Lark Lane is painted above number 13 gift shop.

Painted by Liam Bononi, it’s not just any old mural. It’s a mural with meaning, or several if you listen to the folk tales;

🐦It was the nickname for a Lark Lane legend the Queen of Lark Lane
🐦It’s the ghost of Florence Maybrick who was held in the old police station for murdering her husband and now supposedly haunts the old station
🐦It links back to the Lark bird as its often referred to in WW1 poetry, as when there was a break in fighting they could hear the call of the skylarks

Whatever the true meaning it’s a stunning feature of Lark Lane and if you look closely at the mural, you’ll see the quote ‘the sweet song of the lark’ taken from the famous LFC anthem, you’ll never walk alone. ❤️

When you’ve finished admiring the mural pop into the shop, it’s like an Aladdins cave.
