I’ve trained over 20,000 dogs at my school, and I see owners make these three exact mistakes every single day.
First, you’re using their name too much. If you say it all the time and nothing important happens, it just becomes background noise. Instead, treat their name like a winning lottery ticket. Only say it when you’re about to give them a high-value treat or a favorite toy.
But even if you get the name right, there’s a second reason they’re tuning you out: you’re actually motivating them to stay away. Think about it. If you only call them in a frustrated, angry voice, why would they want to come to you? You have to be the most fun thing in their world, not the person scolding them from across the park.
Now, this final sign is the one almost everyone misses.
