Not been sharing much due to flaring, and trying to spend time off my phone. I didn’t want to share a negative message but I’m struggling again, the pain and itch are unbearable. I cry myself to sleep some nights. Sometimes i can’t sleep because the itch is incessant.
I long to enjoy winter, my favourite season, with JUST normal eczema to manage. #tsw is ridiculous. I can’t believe how many winters it has now marred with its red, raw creeping dampness, its bone deep visceral itching, its painful agonising proliferating and flaking. I really am exhausted with it.
Because at 7 years no one wants to know. I feel I can’t ask for help or share that I’m struggling because it’s been far too long. I doubt my convictions and fear it will never stop, that maybe I should try medication again. That maybe my doctor is right and I will always need topical steroids. But the voice inside me is strong. She is furious, she is strong and she will never give up.

My own dermatologist told me just this week that he still wasn’t sure it was real. Preferring to think of it as tachyphylaxis rebadged. I have a lot of respect for my derm. He continues to see me once a year when most would have discharged me for refusing treatment. I asked him to do this so he could follow my skin healing journey. You know what he said? My forhead and skin still look red, I need to moisturise more and then which new treatments he thinks I should be open to. This is how most people are treated. It is beyond frustrating. But I want an open dialogue. It’s the only way we will see progress.

1) topical steroids are still the first line of treatment

3) every day people ask me for advice, support or reassurance. People deep in pain and suffering. It’s reassurance I’m not qualified to give - except to listen, because I’ve been there. Alone and desperate for guidance.
Something is very wrong with a system which one day recognises a condition, shares this online and then carries on as if nothing has changed.
I can now sleep at night after years of crippling insomnia due to TSW.
My message to the medical profession is - how do you honestly sleep at night in the face of all the evidence, the suffering? The cries for help?

I’ve found my own way. Tried and discovered products that work for me, for trouble areas that need extra healing and soothing.
The friends I’ve made and the people I’ve met who supported me through this are what made it possible. Without them I would have been completely alone. The medical profession are not yet able to accept, diagnose and support people through topical steroid withdrawal. As a patient that’s very hard to face and accept.
And I will continue to write, advocate and raise awareness until things have changed and it’s easier for dermatologists to understand and people with eczema to avoid this chronic and debilitating condition.
Obviously I’d rather not have been through TSW but it’s taught me so much, about myself, my skin and how I want to live on this planet. I’ve reassessed literally everything.
Slowly I am learning what works for my skin and what doesn’t with kindness and compassion.
No more shame, guilt and judgement from my own negative thinking. I am brilliant, beautiful, perfect as I am and I am healing.

Lighting not quite the same but it’s moving in the right direction.
1. What I notice most is the deep lines, creases and elephant skin has reduced a lot.
2. My eyes too, I couldn’t even open them fully back then.
3. And I remember the discomfort even trying to smile. It all cracked and split. Smiling is so vital to us as humans, when the act of smiling is taken from you that has a profound impact on mental health.
4. My collagen is returning! Slowly but surely.
5. The skin is also incredibly strong now and so versatile, it can go from inflamed to flaking off and back to normal- ish in hours! A Dead Sea salt bath is my absolute best bit of advice to anyone. Along with self care, rest and addressing your mental health.
