There is temporary scaffolding up to study and restore the Abbey ceiling for the first time since Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. It was incredible to walk through parts of the triforium not usually accessible to the public, seeing details and viewpoints that so few people ever have.

Today, recipients of the Order are usually senior military officers or senior civil servants. New Knights and Dames Grand Cross are installed at a colourful service held in the Abbey.
Last year, the Order celebrated its 300th anniversary year at a service here attended by HM The King in his role as Sovereign of the Order and by HRH The Prince of Wales, its Great Master.
The Dean of Westminster serves as Dean of the Order, and King Henry VII's Lady Chapel at the Abbey is designated as the Chapel of the Order. Thirty-four of the most senior members are allocated stalls in the Chapel, where they display their standards, crests and armorial stall plates.
Famous holders of the Order have included Admiral Nelson, Earl Haig and Lord Kitchener. Women were admitted to the Order in 1971, with Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, appointed the first Dame Grand Cross.

The coronation was held in the Abbey on 23 April 1702 and some of the congregation had a bird's eye view of the service from the triforium gallery. The invitation instructs the holder to bring the ticket to the north door of the Abbey on the morning of coronation day.

There is temporary scaffolding up to study and restore the Abbey ceiling for the first time since Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. It was incredible to walk through parts of the triforium not usually accessible to the public, seeing details and viewpoints that so few people ever have.
I also then spent time wondering around the Abbey, with over 1000 years of history at the site. I saw:
The oldest door in Britain, likely constructed in the 1050s AD. The sudden awareness of its age and all the history it has silently witnessed stopped me in my tracks
One of the oldest surviving parts of the Abbey, built around 1070 AD — the Pyx Chamber. It was originally part of the undercroft underneath the monks’ dormitory then was used as a treasury, possible a sacristy and storage for Exchequer records. The impressive doors date from the early 14th century, and you can still see the medieval tiled floors and chests.
I also saw the effigy of Queen Mary I and a corset from the funeral effigy of Queen Elizabeth I.
If you’re new here — I’m Jacklynn, and to me history isn’t just facts, figures and artefacts, but the humanity of the people who lived before us. If you enjoyed this, follow for part 2!
