I like to believe that portrait photography in its purest form happens in the moment when a mutual understanding forms between model and photographer. An understanding of who you are and what you stand for. It can be a simple superficial understanding, a feeling of what kind of person the other one is. It can run deeper when you feel a pain or history that must have shaped the other. A tangible vulnerability. Something you feel and recognize. Whatever that kind of understanding is, the result is the same. The looks and egos take a backseat. The model's worn mask doesn't so much get dropped, but rather gets chosen. Handpicked. A look, a moment, an emotion, a sentiment popping through. Something real. Something true. And as photography has the uncanny possibility to pause and freeze a moment in time... Suddenly "you are who you are while EVERYbody is watching". So for me... Portrait photography is having 2 people in a space and a camera in between. But not without a real connection... or it will only be a click.
