It’s been three years since discovering wool can be used as a waterproof outer layer to cloth nappies (making for an entirely plastic-free system 🙌♻️) and South Africa has another local maker and supplier of their own merino wool nappy soakers thanks to - a heart-led social enterprise that teaches women in vulnerable communities to knit and crochet using 100% natural yarns, sourced locally and dyed by hand here on home-soil 🇿🇦 🧶

Using superfine merino, the finest of its kind in the world, exclusively sourced from sheep in the heart of our own wool country—the Karoo— there is much excitement around more locally-driven accessibility of wool soakers.

The intersection of a fibre such as wool with conscious, renewable-consumerism, community hand-craft work and local provenance is as conscious and sustainable as choices come in a world today that is driven much by convenience, over-consumption, unethical mass-manufacturing and synthetics.

Such considered choice is fully realised in adopting a cloth nappy system for your babe that replaces the conventional polyurethane laminate (PUL) synthetically-waterproof outer layer with inherently waterproof WOOL (courtesy of the lanolin in sheep hair, capable of absorbing up to 30% it’s weight in liquid) 🐑

Cloth nappies with wool covers makes for an entirely circular system of wear and decomposition.

Why preclude airflow from your little one’s most sensitive bodily region if you don’t have to? Why contribute to more landfill if you don’t have to? Why continuously outlay money on disposables if you don’t have? Why vote with your dollar for more plastic manufacturing when you don’t have to?

Plastic is weak, has a short life span and remains on earth forever. Conversely, wool is a strong, natural fibre, has a long lifespan and breaks back down into the earth.

It just makes sense that where there is viable choice, you go the route that doesn’t adversely affect your health, the environment or your pocket overtime.

What a wonderful celebration of the functional diversity and inherent brilliance of natural fibres, conscious living and local skill this products speaks to.
There is a big element to motherhood, for me, that is forward-thinking in the way of “what am I sewing into my children’s lives, their environments, relationships, health… every aspect of their lives…here-and-now in the day-to-day, that is going to be felt by their children and their children?” Unequivocally, there is the love, presence, connection, nourishment that our whole world, each moment, is embedded in.

…but there is also the tangible, which can bring a realness—by way of touch and feel—to aspects of heritage and lineage. Physical heirlooms ~ a dress, an apron, a recipe book, a photo album, a tablecloth, a quilt…evoking the thought of “my mother’s or my aunty’s or my grandmother’s hands touched this, used this, lived in their arms, sat in home…” There’s something to that for me and I see the attachment my girls have to our family heirlooms. It’s palpable inheritance, a physical reminder of stories, lives gone by or even still living on.

It also speaks to a core principle of living for us that is acquiring thoughtfully, with intention and almost always with thought and care for endurance and notion of “down-the-line”, a quality of being “passed on”. Toys, textiles and other physical items within ours and our children’s environments should be no different, in my opinion.

as a brand and Ruth, as such a considered, slow-maker of fabric dolls, represents all this to me. Her creations are entirely design-led by the client but by way of the gorgeous selection of natural fibre textiles of linens, cottons and wool, any combination of personal-desire effortlessly results in a timeless piece in both quality and aesthetic.

These are everything a true heirloom doll should be, for me. Entirely curated in an individualistic scope, but made by a woman, mama, who, through her diligent, heart-centered craft, is really stitching seams to last lifetimes and we should all be endeavouring to acquire and support that when we find need for something special for our little ones and those to come.

A weekend in fun, playful, outwear by 💛🌸

From cosy home-days to those in the crisp mountains ~ charming little jerseys & vests made locally by a passionate mama.
7 months post-partum and nourishment has been un-wavering, as always.

We know this to be a deep state of breaking down, rebuilding and renewal in the mother’s body.

Food always organic, local and seasonal to signal, on a cellular level, partnership between myself and my environment to optimally serve my physiology.

Warm or room temperature foods, easy-to-digest broth and stock-bases, cholestrol and saturated fat rich, amino-acid-forward, natural-sugars (roots & fruits) and blood-builders…

intuitive above all else ♥️
Them: “when is her nap time?”
Me: “I don’t know- I just let her sleep whenever she wants to.”

Since birth, we have not imposed any temporal bounds on our girls’ sleep; letting them sleep whenever, wherever, for however long or short. Honouring the premise that sleep needs are bio-individual, their is variance from child-to-child (human-to-human) and just as we as adults need more some days and less on others given the seasonal nature of life and moving through varied bodily undertakings, so is the same for little humans- especially as their bodies navigate considerably more biological changes, system upgrades and developmental periods that shift the terrain of sleep in a manner we can’t track.

What we’ve observed in this approach of giving our babies’ full space and autonomy to explore rest and wake attuned to their own bodies, is they do eventually establish their own sleep routine(s)! Not that we were anticipating it…but definitely somewhat intrigued by watching it unfold and find that same periodic permanence in the way an imposed sleep schedule would (quantitative/measurable wake periods between naps & duration of sleeping periods themselves).

We take the seat of letting the child’s body do its own thing—unrestrained, unobstructed—observe any patterns forming and facilitate those on an individual basis and also within the family unit (where perhaps there is structure to harmonise with).

A considered and intuitive approach that is another threading of, a return to, ‘ease’ in motherhood. At least this is true for me. Their sleep is not a stressor or point of angst. We contact nap, we independent nap, we bed-share, we co-sleep, sometimes they nap, sometimes they don’t. The ease within this deeply primal, child-attuned approach is relishable!

Let go of rigidity, generalisations, impositions & metrics.
Embrace instinct, natural flow, individuality, observation & facilitation*.

*critically considering environments & light-exposures from utero. The interplay here is profound.

Mine and yours basic guide to caring for wool; the original eco-fibre; natural, biodegradable and renewable. As good for you as it is for the earth 🧶🐑

So you’re seeking out more of this superstar fibre, perhaps investing a little more, you want to see it last generations (for real). Fortunately, wool has inherit durability qualities so there isn’t much work on our end other than to understand its properties and tend to it through and between wears and washes over the years.

The overarching premise of wool care: seldom wash, rest between wears, store properly.

Resting ~
Rest wool pieces for 24hrs before wearing them again. This gives the natural resilience and spring in the wool fibre time to recover and return to its original shape, prevent wrinkles, reduce odour and maintain its thermoregulating properties. Rest them inside-out in a room with natural (indirect) light and good airflow.

The idea of resting clothes might seem overthought but understanding the inherent properties of wool presents the opportunity to wear these pieces a good 5 times (if you have undergarments) between resting and/or washing.

Storing ~
During wearing-season, woven wool garments should be hung on shaped or padded coat hangers. Knitted garments should be gently folded and stored in drawers. Ensure environments are out of direct sunlight, cool and dry. Consider keeping them inside-out between wears to prevent pilling and damage.

Out of wearing season, ensure they are clean and pack them away in breathable garment bags, acid-free tissue paper or wrapped in pure linen. Use cedar blocks and lavender sachets to prevent moths.

Store garments with closures zipped or buttoned.

Refreshing ~
Wool garments can be refreshed after unpacking or wearing by hanging them in a steamy bathroom. Moisture from the steam will remove wrinkles and restore the fibres to their original shape.

Washing ~
As infrequently as possible. Wool fibres have a natural outer protective layer that helps prevents stains from being absorbed and attract less dust and lint. These inherent fibre-characteristics facilitate lots of wear and little washing requirements.

“Mama, I don’t want to look at the ocean, I want to get in it” ~ Rivqah

Light attuning their circadian rhythm; taking every opportunity as a family to book-end our days with good light exposure, watching the sunrise and sunset, spending our days outside, eating in natural light, our girls napping in daylight, lighting candles after dark.

Sun kissing their bare skin, building their solar callus, synthesising vitamin D from their cholesterol-rich, low-PUFA diets. Building immunity & optimising hormonal development.

Fresh air stroking their hairs, a visceral reminder of our connection and biological responsiveness to natural elements; absorbing all the negative ions for optimal physiology and psychology.

Fingers in the dirt, soil microbe exposure priming their developing immune systems for a robust and responsive future to dis-ease. One of the single most effective ways to inoculate the immune system of a child is to expose them to biologically rich, active living soil and other alive, pro-biotic environments.

Barefeet on the ground stimulating nerves and pressure points on the sole of the foot for balance and posture, improved circulation and activating organs.

The gentle, non-threatening stimuli of rustling leaves, birdsong and dappled light stimulating the vagus nerve, initiating deep, rhythmic breathing, rest and digest, reduced muscle tension.

Natural sensory stimulation forming strong neural connections to enhance cognitive function, flexibility, attention and focus.

Motor skill development through the natural world around them. Less toys and more exploration of varied terrain, climbing trees, engaging with and manipulating natural materials by hand, water play, jumping across streams… it’s all there. The full-breadth of motor skill development is accessible through nature play.

Each day, my goal as a mother, is connection in the natural world. To creator, to creation, to source, to each other, to the living. Less materiality. Less indoors. Less doing and acquiring. More being.

Nature effortlessly invites us in this way and is healing all the while.
