Het is een foto van mij én in de bril zie je de weerspiegeling van mij terwijl ik de foto neem. Het een dubbel zelfportret. Of zelfs driedubbel, als je mijn gezicht, mijn hoofd in de weerspiegeling in de telefoon én mijn hand die de telefoon vasthoudt telt! Me, myself & I.”

De schilderijen van Eugenie Boon nodigen je uit in een wereld die op het eerste gezicht bruist van kleur en Caribische energie, maar die bij een tweede blik diepere verhalen vertelt. Boon groeide op op Curaçao en gebruikt haar doeken om de gelaagde identiteit van het eiland te onderzoeken.
In haar schilderstijl combineert Boon een expressieve, bijna speelse toets met scherpe maatschappelijke vragen. Elk doek is een zoektocht naar wat het betekent om een ‘Yu di Kòrsou’ (kind van Curaçao) te zijn in de wereld van vandaag.

Ben je ook als een blok gevallen voor de intense foto’s van deze fotograaf? Wij spraken meerdere mensen -stilgevallen voor de werken- die zeiden kippenvel te hebben 🖤
Fotograaf Awoiska van der Molen creëert verstilde, analoge zwart-witfoto’s die de psychologische essentie van afgelegen landschappen onderzoeken. Haar werkwijze is solitair en intens, gericht op het verdwijnen van tijd en ruis - om tot een ‘nulpunt’ in het beeld te komen.
Van der Molen staat bekend om haar uiterst trage en ambachtelijke werkproces, waarbij zij gebruikmaakt van klassieke analoge technieken. Zij werkt uitsluitend met analoge camera’s en film, waarbij ze de voorkeur geeft aan de vertraging en de fysieke kwaliteit die dit medium biedt boven digitale fotografie.
In de donkere kamer maakt zij haar eigen afdrukken met de hand. Ze wordt geprezen om haar monumentale zilvergelatinedrukken op barietpapier, een materiaal dat bekendstaat om zijn diepe zwarttonen en tactiele textuur.
