Third-year MArch student Spring Yu designed a board game as a community engagement device for her Thesis project. This was conceived as a part of game board culture, united with community dreams for urban environments as well as the delivery of architectural knowledge that would help a community to mobilize the physical and social improvements of their neighborhood.

During Spring’s time as an undergrad, she worked for an indie game board company and a game research lab and took part in game research learning about the power of games to enact social change through play. “I thought it would be really meaningful and effective to utilize that power in relation to my studies of architecture here at Weitzman which is why I opted to pursue it as a thesis project for my final year,” she said of her project.

Spring hosted a community event with the Cedar Park community where she engaged neighborhood members in an in-person playing of her game. There was a big map of Cedar Park, game playing pieces, kits for information delivery, etc. She presented the event, and its conclusions, as the manifestation of her thesis work at her final review.

From the Archives

The Architectural Archives would like to extend a warm congratulations to the class of 2026!!!

In celebration of the occasion, we thought we would share a few photographs pertaining to the history of the Weitzman School of Design, including a photograph of Louis I. Kahn in his cap and gown in June, 1924, as well as a photo of the 1924 Architecture Society with Professor Paul Cret as well as students Louis Kahn and Yang Tingbao.

We asked our Director and Chief Curator, William Whitaker, for more information about this lovely photographic collection:
“The bulk of the photographs were taken for the Architecture Society, and found by the staff of the Fisher Fine Arts Library in a storage closet. They transferred the collection to the Architectural Archives about 10 years ago. What a wonderful view into the life of the school, its faculty and staff (there are a few women in the photos), and, of course, the students. The emphasis here is in seeing the students in well-lit spaces, producing designs using watercolor washes and charcoal. Much work was by hand (obviously no computers were used in the making of those drawings), and the library - an important reference in a Beaux-arts education - was in the middle of the school, itself (then housed in Hayden Hall). It’s fascinating to see architectural renderings - many are by Penn faculty members (like George Koyl), including several which remain in the Archives’ collections.”

Congratulations again to the graduates and happy summer to all!

This spring, a third-year studio led by Pritzker Prize laureate Kazuyo Sejima of SANAA and Toshihiro Oki took Master of Architecture students to Inujima, a small island in Japan with an ephemeral natural landscape and historic structures that harken back to a simpler time.

The Titled Inujima 犬島: Architecture Becomes Environment, the studio asked students to design an architectural intervention on the island, where Sejima has already designed five art pavilions, a gazebo, and the Inujima Life Garden, a renovation of a greenhouse.

“In the studio, we try to revitalize the island one structure at a time,” said Sejima, the Paul Philippe Cret Visiting Professor at Weitzman. “When we worked there, one project told me what I should do next.”

1) Ricardo Alvarado and David Owe’s design challenges the rigid boundaries of built space through the creation of interior gardens that grow outward through the canopy.
2) Spencer Relihan and Jack Bradley designed a shaded canopy for an outdoor communal kitchen that reuses wood from Inujima’s abandoned houses while also redirecting wind through a tensioned scrim.
3) Laura Ellis and Tylor Chu’s plan, Marine Life of Inujima, reimagines the island’s shoreline as a place where people can learn, gather, fish, and participate in the restoration of marine life.
4) Veronica Moore and Leeane Li designed a communal space where visitors can build small stone sculptures and engage with the changing material qualities of Inujima’s granite as it reacts to water.
5) In Ivy Liu and Lisa Liu’s scheme, sited along a waterway, three stone-based devices redirect, slow, filter, and collect water with minimal human intervention, creating new spatial relationships between plants and people.
6) Junxi Liu and Etta Yang’s design, Undead Soul, features a series of floating balloons attached to the island’s granite boulders.
7) With Sejima and Oki as their guides, Master of Architecture students traveled to Inujima as part of Weitzman’s Spring 2026 Travel Week.
8) Students presented their designs to the guest critics at the final review at Meyerson Hall on May 5.

Third-year students from the 704 studios presented their work during their final reviews last week. Their projects reflected the diverse locations of their studio travel.

In their teaching and their practice, Weitzman faculty are helping museums in the US and abroad deepen connections to their site and community.

1) “Architecture’s role is to fulfill the needs of the clients by shaping the gallery spaces in the way that will work best for the institution,” says Daniel Markiewicz, an associate professor of practice in architecture, whose Master of Architecture students designed an addition to Penn’s Institute of Contemporary Art. Work by Chenxi Li.
2) Associate Professor of Architecture Ferda Kolatan leads an Advanced Architectural Design studio working in the city of Side on Turkey’s southern coast at an archaeological site with ancient architectural artifacts. Students are charged with designing a new archaeological museum using the ancient building remains that still exist on the site. Work by Eugene Chen and Xiaofeng Mo.
3) For Marion Weiss, Graham Professor of Practice in Architecture and co-founder of the firm, the competition for the Nelson-Atkins commission was “one of the most extraordinary opportunities we could think of.” WEISS/MANFREDI's design (left) follows a 2007 addition by Steven Holl (right). "Museums need to transcend their traditional bounded identities," says Weiss.
4) WEISS/MANFREDI's design for the La Brea Tar Pits Page Museum in Los Angeles
5) "We reject rigid dichotomies in favor of more entangled tensions that sustain the viewer’s attention over time,” says Ferda Kolatan of his MSD-AAD studio. (Photo: Dylan Li)
6) Yichen He and Hannah Xu's design for the site in Side, Turkey

These are just a few of the museums that Weitzman faculty have engaged with in recent years.

On display are DumoLab’s newest bio-composite research on hyperlocal material cycles forming 3m-domes, chemically-interactive earthen tiles and panels, food-waste-based shingles, and furniture from juicing pulp. “Ramusumar” soundscape by Eugene Lew composed from scores of wet and dry hardware throughout Ramus Dome manufacturing process.

DumoLab’s storefront will be exhibited until May 31st at 3616 Lancaster Ave., Philadelphia.
