Early specialisation is highly overrated.

We are told to pick a lane and narrow our focus. But this conventional wisdom is outdated.

The data tells a different story.

A landmark study in Science analysing 34,000 top performers found that adult peak performance is heavily associated with early multidisciplinary practice, not narrowing your focus too soon.

Across sports, chess, and academia, nearly 90% of elite youth performers are overtaken by adulthood.

The world-class adults, including Olympic champions and Nobel laureates, are largely a different group of people: the ones who took a broader route.

Varying your learning across different disciplines does three things:

- Trains your mind to think flexibly
- Helps you spot the hidden, systemic patterns driving complex problems.
- It allows you to connect insights that others miss

Creativity and innovation happen when different ways of seeing are brought into contact.

This is exactly why LIS students learn to connect the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Our BASc and MASc degrees are built for complex, real-world problem-solving, allowing you to draw on diverse perspectives to tackle the issues you care about.

How do you develop a complete mind? By realising that everything connects.

Have you ever come across a Tube ad and thought, “that's exactly how I think!”?

That's been the experience of many of our students and alumni over the last five years, and it's how a lot of them found us. 👀

This week, we've launched our 2026 Tube campaign, along with a brand new homepage, to find the next cohort of LIS students ready to take that step.

If you're curious about more than one thing. If you've been sitting with a complex problem and need the tools to go deeper. If you want to lead differently. If interdisciplinary thinking is just how your mind works – we built this place for you.

Most graduates spend their first year finding their feet. Charlie spent his changing how Parliament communicates.

Charlie Pullen studied the BASc at LIS and left knowing how to build something.

Commons Clipper monitors every Commons speech and sends MP offices clips, transcripts, and captions ready to post. A real problem. A real solution. One year out of university.

"The skills I learnt there - coding, systems thinking and repeatedly tackling complex problems - made building Commons Clipper possible."

And he's not alone. 89% of LIS BASc graduates go straight into skilled work, in consulting, tech, sustainability, government, finance, research, and beyond.

Different sectors. Same foundation: the ability to tackle complex problems and build something that matters.

Bravo, Charlie! 👏

"The government has to plan boldly for a world moving at break-neck pace. That means overhauling our stifling exam system, broadening what is taught in schools and getting young people to make connections between disciplines from an early age.” - Peter Hyman

Twenty years ago, Peter Hyman left Downing Street to become a teaching assistant in a challenging London school. Most people thought he was mad.
What followed was one of the most consequential careers in modern British education.

Before founding schools and shaping classrooms, Peter worked at the heart of government as a senior adviser in Downing Street, helping shape political strategy and policy at the highest level.

That experience continues to inform his work today: bridging the gap between education, policy, and real-world change.

He went on to co-found School 21 in Stratford (with our very own co-founder, Ed Fidoe), a school built around a simple but radical idea: that education should develop the whole child. Head. Heart. Hand. He then co-founded Voice 21, the charity that has taken oracy into thousands of schools and has put speaking skills back on the national agenda.

We’re delighted to welcome Peter to the MASc in Education Futures, where he’ll lead two sessions: oracy and head/heart/hand pedagogies.

Oracy, the ability to think and communicate through talk, is one of the most undervalued skills in education. Peter has spent two decades proving why that matters and building the institutions to do something about it.

For students on this programme asking how education can be done differently, and how it connects to wider systems like policy and politics, there are few better guides.

🌍 Forget the Classics – These Students are Studying to Save the World! 🌍

We’re delighted to say that the has published a dedicated feature on our unique approach, challenging traditional learning by dissecting multiple disciplines to empower students with the skills they need to address real-world challenges. 🎓

Take Zuzana Fernandes; initially set to study physics at King’s College London, she chose LIS to focus on practical solutions that matter. Today, she’s applying her skills as a software engineer, ready to make an impact! Or meet Lucy Adeniji, who has a passion for solving social issues (and has been tipped to be a future Prime Minister!). Lucy tackled the racialised wealth gap during her time at LIS and is now joining the green jobs firm Greenworkx to continue her mission. 💼

Our Dean, Carl Gombrich, encapsulates our ethos: “Critical thinking has to go with real-world application. You cannot solve problems like climate change or AI ethics from a single disciplinary perspective.” At LIS, education is not just about learning - it’s about transforming that learning into action, making a tangible impact on the world.

If you’re ready to take on the world’s biggest challenges with a fresh, interdisciplinary approach, our doors are open. 🚀

Buzzfeed recently published a now deleted article on what AI thinks Barbies would look like from different countries around the world.

The results contained extreme forms of representational bias - including colourist and racist depictions, which is something that AI image generators are often prone to doing.

With AI image generators like MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and Dall-E gaining huge popularity, it’s important that we are vigilant about the forms of bias that these technologies can fuel.

Full video coming soon on ‘How AI Image Generators Make Bias Worse’ on The London Interdisciplinary School Youtube Channel.

LIS is hard to explain succinctly. And we mean *really* hard. Because there’s a lot going on.

We’re a ‘higher-education-provider’-which-isn’t-the-coolest-word-but-for-now-we-have-to-use-it-who-built-brand-new-undergraduate-and-postgraduate-degrees-for-students-who-want-to-tackle-real-world-problems-because-these-problems-are-incredibly-important-and-deeply-interdisciplinary-which-is-a-word-we’re-trying-to-shorten-to-“ID”-but-it-hasn’t-quite-caught-on-yet-and-we’re-also-developng-this-big-group-of-organisations-called-the-LIS-Network-who-work-with-our-faculty-and-students-on-problems-they’re-facing-because-lots-of-clever-things-happen-inside-universities-and-we-think-they-should-happen-outside-too-oh-and-did-we-mention-we’re-looking-at-launching-short-certficiates-so-more-people-can-study-with-us-and-and-and-and-and….

See what we mean?

So we set ourselves the challenge of explaining LIS in 60 seconds.

How do you think we did?
