This project has been quietly simmering in the back of my mind for a few years now. There was no master plan, just a need to figure out how to tell stories that feel honest. Before any interviews, there was trial and error. Learning equipment, making bad edits, late night tutorials, asking friends for help. All of it just to get to a place where I could sit with people like me and truly listen. As I feel myself drawn toward documentary making, I want to use this platform to learn, to get better at documenting stories, and to connect more deeply with others.
Now that I am traveling again, the goal is simple. Meet people, understand their heritage, and see how culture, memory, and survival show up in their food. I will make mistakes along the way. That is part of it. That is the journey.
Episode one of Inspector Hummus begins with someone I deeply admire, Ahmad Alalaea of Wazzup Falafel.
I first ate his food during the peak of COVID, when he was slinging falafel from a food truck in Naarm with total focus and determination. I would bet everything I have/ Melbourne that he makes some of the softest and purest falafel and hummus around. Food that took me straight back to my childhood in Jordan, during my family’s migration from Iraq.
We spent the day together while he prepped for service, and it was impossible not to notice how much care goes into everything he serves. No shortcuts. No ego. Just love and work.
Ahmad, thank you for trusting me with the beginning of this project. I hope you open a dozen more stores and keep feeding people the way you do.

The Falafel Pita Pocket was so yum and the perfect quantity for lunch! And the falafel mixed plate was a great way to taste everything, and was huge, definitely worth if you want to be full full
But vegan desserts?!:O There were too many options to choose from so we grabbed a pistachio mix (omg yum) and the Nammourah which was quite sweet, but a good change from Baklava.
