Of plain circular form having a central divider and lock. An attractive feature is the decorative finial in the form of a Chinese gentleman holding a fish. The decoration is particularly fine, with gadroon edge borders and concentric bands of hand engraved leaf motifs, greek key design and basket weave.
This elegant silver box is in very good condition and of excellent colour. The engraving is still crisp, with a full set of clear and matching English silver hallmarks.

Of rectangular design having a shell handle and bracket feet. It has 2 integral pen trays, 3 pots with pull off lids for ink and sand. The overall appearance with the flat chased foliate and shell decoration is stunning.
The inkstand did not enter into common household use until the 18th century. The main requirement was a container for ink and another for sand (or pounce) which was used for drying the ink. Also required was a space to put quills. Some inkstands also incorporated a taper stick for melting sealing wax or even a bell.

A Rare Antique William III Silver Tumbler Cup, London 1694.
The classic tipsy drinking cup. With a large hand engraved armorial to the front. The shield within tied plumage is very typical of this date and the hand beaten finish is very charming.
Tumbler Cups were made from the mid-17th century onwards. They are made from thick gauge sheet silver which was hammered up so that the sides become thinner towards the top and the rounded base would have the greater weight. When they are knocked over they will automatically right themselves. A very useful drinking cup to use onboard ship.

Boxed silver tea caddies with sliding tops. The plain rectangular design with canted corners is typical of the early 1700’s. The lids have a lift off cap which doubles as a tea measure. Each has a hand engraved coat of arms to the front for the Hawkins family. The boxes come in a fitted shagreen box, with brass lock escutcheon.
A tea caddy is a box, jar, canister, or other receptacle used to store tea. The word is believed to be derived from ‘catty’, the Chinese pound, equal to about a pound and a third avoirdupois. The earliest examples that came to Europe were Chinese tea canisters in blue and white porcelain with china lids or stoppers. Tea in the early 18th Century was expensive, and also there was a tax on tea. so early tea caddies were small and made in precious materials such as silver, shagreen or tortoiseshell which reflected the valuable contents within.
