Back in the early 2000’s it was featured in the German magazine “Architecture & Wohnen” and two books out of Barcelona: “Maximalist Interiors” and “Lofts - Designer & Design”. Always interesting to revisit the work I did with Michael Somoroff - days and days of discussions - on this 2,500 sq ft SoHo Loft. What feels fresh today is already on its way to looking dated — just like Andy’s blue sweater in The Devil Wears Prada.
Here are some of the IKEA kitchens I have done over the years. Each has bits of custom work added however all of the functional cabinetry (carcasses with doors and/or drawers) are IKEA units. Some have custom finishes on them that we’ve had sprayed at cabinet shops (that made the custom bits) or at auto body shops. Now there are a number of 3rd-party companies producing custom fronts and other elements.
In each of the cases shown, IKEA cabinets were chosen to fit within the specific budget requirements we had for the overall project; allowing carefully for the not-inconsiderable cost of assembling and installing them properly.

This might come as a surprise, but I have recommended IKEA kitchens to my clients over the regular mid-line kitchen companies because I actually think they can be better and certainly way less expensive. For example, IKEA uses the same drawer hardware that’s often found in top-of-the-line European kitchens.
We have realized over 100 kitchens at this point; 8 or so of which have had IKEA cabinets often creating custom fronts for them - having them lacquered custom colors - and designing custom elements that integrate with them that make their disposition particular to each project. In the last few years a number of after-market companies have sprung up offering - in some cases quite interesting - custom fronts specifically for IKEA cabinet “carcasses”.
