We have a very special visitor for next weeks Storytime!

Local author Sandra Ruddle will be reading her children's book, inspired by her much-loved Golden Retriever's adventures around Perth.

The tail-wagging hero of the story herself will be joining us, and we hear she's hopeful for a few gentle pats from visiting families (or anyone willing to tell her she's a good girl)!

The level of talent in this year's Youth Awards is incredible!

Young artists from across Australia were invited to explore portraiture through the people they admire, their family, friends and their own sense of self.

Across these works, identity is explored as artists discuss culture, belonging, pressure, relationships and the complicated process of figuring yourself out.

Free to view in the Old Gaol at WA Museum Boola Bardip until Sunday 19 July.

Visiting museums can slow down ageing!

At least, that's what researchers from University College London have said. Their recent study, published in Innovation in Aging, has linked taking an active interest in art and culture with improved health.

Those who undertook an arts activity once a week were, on average, a year younger biologically than those who did not. So technically speaking, viewing an exhibition can actually help you age slower.

That must be why we all feel so young here 💅

Happy International Museum Day!

When you think of Museums, most people imagine galleries and exhibitions. But some of the Museum’s most important work is happening behind-the-scenes, in its collections and research projects.

It is estimated that up to 75% of Australia's biodiversity is still to be described, with major gaps in what we know about invertebrates like beetles.

Museum collections and research help fill those gaps, giving researchers evidence of what lived where, how species are connected and how landscapes have changed over time.

One project, currently taking place around the Pilbara's Fortescue Marsh, has scientists studying ground beetles from the Carabidae family. They are tiny insects, but they are helping answer big questions about biodiversity and environmental change.

This International Museum Day, we’re celebrating the work museums do every day to understand, protect and share the world around us.

‘This was the Batavia Motor Inne, but we called it Hotel California: “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave”’.

In Journeys of Belonging, Brenda shares her story of homelessness in her own words.

Photographed standing in front of the old Batavia Motor Inne, her portrait is one of many in this powerful exhibition by Housing First Support Services, making space for people to talk about their experiences at different stages in their journey.

Journeys of Belonging is free to visit at the Museum of Geraldton until Monday May 18, when the Museum closes temporarily for essential maintenance.

It will be open to the public once again for the WA Day weekend, with Centacare staff in the gallery to speak with visitors and answer questions.
