I’m a sucker for rescues and their stories. Always will be. But I was blown away by Karol’s story.
I spotted a shepherd calmly standing in the crowd just outside St. Mary’s Basilica in Kraków’s main square. I introduced myself and learned about Karol (Polish for Charles).
Karol had just arrived in Poland a few days prior. Before his relocation, he had spent four years in a shelter in Ukraine.
It’s hard to imagine what this dog experienced. Years of shelter life in a country at war, then when conditions got so bad he endured a cross-continent transport. He should have been a nervous wreck - afraid of the world.
Yet here he was, calm as could be, happily meeting a stranger with a camera, playfully sniffing a dog that walked by, and showing off the gentlest mouth when he was offered some Polish sausage (which is the best sausage out there).
The resiliency of dogs is incredible, but Karol is unique. He radiates kindness in a world that hasn’t reciprocated it to him.
He’s currently in wonderful hands with his foster family, and whoever ends up with this dog is going to be so freaking lucky.
