During the programme we will open a conversation about the artefact as witness, the erasure of history through excavation, the objects and topologies of repair, and the relationship of people to their material environments.
Areej Ashhab will be sharing excerpts from her film 𝘓𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, and connecting them to her new installation, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘏𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘴, commissioned for this exhibition. We will also be screening Dina Mimi’s short film 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘦𝘦, which narrates the story of Ram(z)i, a lonely working class man who died twice.
Additionally, Ola Hassanain will present her spatial installation for the exhibition, 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘴, and contextualise it within her ongoing project 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘒𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵. The films and talk will be followed by a conversation between Ola, Dina, and Areej, moderated by Margarita Osipian—interweaving their individual works and the stories that unfold through them.

𝘧𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳, 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘴𝘰𝘪𝘭 is initiated by maria khatchadourian, and includes new and adapted location-specific works by artists Areej Ashhab, Common Ground (Saja Amro and Anna Celda), Ola Hassanain, maria khatchadourian, Ai Ozaki, and belit sağ. Reflecting on food, land, and agricultural practice as the infrastructures through which geographies of displacement, colonial rupture, and kinship are carried and contested—fragile geographies that resist erasure through dialect, embodied knowledge, and ancestral recipes.

This is the first activation of 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘉𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘱, an installation that becomes a learning space, and a work site. We begin with a question: must flour be cheap? From there, we let it unfold through stories, bodies, knowings, and speculations—these become the curriculum.
Above us, a constellation of collected flour bags. Beneath us, sacks holding the weight of hunger, of resistance, of distance traveled from field to mill to bakery to hand. We’ll lie with that weight, carry it, rearrange it, and feel what it does to the body, how pressure grounds us, how heaviness speaks through us.
Together we’ll move through conversations about food systems, mills and grain, food autonomy, aid, and famine, and the quiet violence of a price that was never really just about the mere cost of flour.

The exhibition, on view until 12 July, will be accompanied by an extended context programme. Unfolding through acts of gathering: conversations, reading sessions, workshops, shared meals, foraging, and collective actions. Emerging as an exhibition continually in flux, flour, water, soil will expand through gestures that activate the space as a lived, living, and sustaining environment.

The contemporary visual arts and creative industries (BKCI) in Amsterdam are under severe pressure. Although BKCI institutions are highly regarded internationally and indispensable to the city, conditions are becoming increasingly difficult. Recent research commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam and MOKER reveals that there are significant financial problems and uncertainties behind the scenes.
In the Visual Arts and Creative Industries Emergency Plan, we call, on behalf of MOKER, for structural additional investment of €4.4 million per year and policy adjustments by the Municipality of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Arts Council and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. This is necessary to strengthen the sector, secure its position within the local arts ecosystem, and offer prospects for development and growth.

Exchanges is the Fund’s platform for creative cross-pollination: it connects Prince Claus Awardees with Amsterdam’s cultural landscape while building long-lasting relationships across the city’s diverse artistic scenes.

Join us for the festive opening of 𝒻𝓁𝑜𝓊𝓇, 𝓌𝒶𝓉𝑒𝓇, 𝓈𝑜𝒾𝓁, the upcoming exhibition at W139. During the evening, there will be snacks by maria khatchadourian and Common Ground, a custom flour, water, soil cocktail, and live performances by participating artist Areej Ashhab and GalalaLive!
GalalaLive will be performing Ya Quddus, which takes the form of a mantra or prayer intended to offer resilience in challenging times. The performance will feature improvisation in sound and music, drawing inspiration from Egyptian Sufi zikr and Coptic chants, particularly as experienced during mawlid celebrations, where rhythmic trance and collective devotion emerge through breathing, repetition, and poetry.
