Las Heras es una localidad ubicada en la provincia argentina de Santa Cruz, que brotó en el desierto patagónico con la llegada del ferrocarril y la explotación del petróleo por parte del Estado. Cuando la prosperidad se desvaneció, entre otras cosas por la privatización de la petrolera, solo quedaron el viento, la indiferencia y un puñado de habitantes.
Entre 1997 y 1999, el suicidio de doce jóvenes, todos muy conocidos en la ciudad, sacudió a Las Heras. No hubo un listado oficial de aquellas muertes, nadie encendió las luces de alarma. Se decía que en el pueblo pasaban cosas raras, que detrás de las muertes se encontraba una secta, pero también que, en aquella tierra desolada, no había futuro para la juventud. Publicado en 2005, Los suicidas del fin del mundo fue el libro fundacional de Leila Guerriero. La periodista argentina viajó a Las Heras para indagar en la serie de suicidios. Recorrió las mismas calles ventosas por las que habían caminado los suicidas y entrevistó a madres, novios, hermanas y amigos de los muertos, a prostitutas, peluqueros y profesores de colegio que los habían conocido. Para reconstruir aquellas vidas, escuchó testimonios a veces inconclusos, a veces contradictorios, que daban cuenta de existencias duras y olvidadas.
