Subglottic pressure is not just about having support. It is also about where pressure is being managed underneath the voice.

Many singers learn to hold pressure very high in the body. Others begin finding it lower around the epigastric region. Others can eventually access lower coordinations through the low back, lower abdominals, and pelvic region.

As those coordinations change, the relationship underneath the voice changes too.

In general, the lower the body is able to help manage pressure, the less direct pressure the voice may have to manage itself.

One of the most important skills a singer can develop is learning to actually feel these differences.

Can you sense where you are holding pressure when you sing?

Because developing awareness of these coordinations is often part of learning how to build a freer, more stable instrument over time. 🎶

A lot of singers start retracting away from the sound when the resonance begins shifting higher into the head.

Internally, that coordination can feel much brighter, sharper, or even smaller than what they are used to hearing.

So instead of staying with the resonance, they try to darken, warm, or spread the sound to make it feel prettier to themselves.

But sometimes that actually pulls the voice away from the coordination it is trying to find.

In this exercise, some air was also escaping through the nasal passage, so plugging the nose helped encourage more soft palate engagement and gave clearer feedback about the airflow.

Then the next step was learning to trust the resonance inside the head instead of retracting away from it.

As soon as she stayed with that coordination, the voice stabilized and the intonation improved.

One of the more difficult parts of vocal technique is that healthier coordination does not always immediately sound like the finished result singers are hoping for.

A singer can be working in a more balanced and functional way and still feel like the voice is not fully responding yet. That does not necessarily mean the coordination is wrong.

Sometimes the voice has found a better pattern, but it has not yet developed the flexibility and strength to fully stabilize it.

This becomes especially confusing when a singer is used to getting results through tension, force, or compensation. The older coordination may feel more immediate or more powerful simply because it is familiar.

As a result, singers often abandon the healthier coordination too early and return to habits that feel more secure in the moment, even if they are less sustainable over time.

A lot of technical development comes from repeating the correct muscular coordination consistently enough for the voice to trust it.

That process is usually much less dramatic than people expect, but much more lasting.

Don’t mistake gripping all over with support. You have to learn how to mentally untangle your lower body sensation from your head, neck and shoulders! It’s a practice in concentration and going inside…

#vocaltechnique #operasinger #classicalsinger
A lot of female singers spend years trying to manage the voice without fully developing awareness of the body underneath it.

But singing is physical coordination. And for many women, learning how to truly ground into the lower body can change the instrument dramatically over time.

That may come through weightlifting, squats, resistance training, sports, dance, or other forms of physical work that help build awareness and connection in the body. The exact path will look different for every singer.

But the goal is not for the lower body and the voice to function as separate things. Eventually, those coordinations have to work together.

Because what happens in the body directly affects pressure management underneath the voice. And if singers never learn how to connect those sensations and coordinations together, they often end up trying to manage everything only at the level of the throat or vocal folds.

In my experience, developing that relationship with the body earlier rather than later can make an enormous difference in stability, coordination, and freedom in the voice.

A lot of singers are trying to apply “good technique” onto bodies that are still full of tension patterns and compensations underneath.

That’s often why singers can hear the same corrections for years without things fully stabilizing. Sometimes the missing piece is not more information, but deeper understanding of how their individual instrument is functioning and responding.

The VWJ Membership is designed for advanced female classical singers who want ongoing technical support, deeper body awareness, and a space to continue exploring their instrument alongside their existing studies or professional work. Many singers use it adjacent to work with their primary teacher to better understand their own vocal patterns, coordination, and technical tendencies.

Through live classes, technical discussions, masterclasses, and an extensive video library, we work deeply into the coordination of the singing voice and the body underneath it.

A lot of singers are told to “relax the tongue,” but for some people that instruction doesn’t actually create access to the space they need.

One way I like to think about the epiglottis area is as a kind of funnel in the back of the throat.

The very back of the tongue comes together and creates this sensation where the sound travels up through that space and then expands outward.

For some singers, that feeling can create awareness of what’s happening in the back of the throat much more effectively than just trying to keep everything relaxed.

Because sometimes the issue isn’t that singers are trying to create tension. It’s that they don’t yet have awareness of that area or coordination there.

And that’s why one approach doesn’t work for everybody.

If the back of the throat feels very narrow or held while singing, this can be a useful way to start exploring a different sensation.

Keep it easy and exploratory.
This is about awareness, not forcing a shape.
