The other day, I had the honor of participating in a demonstration as a member of Mutya Filipino Fighting Arts at the Philippine-Japan Friendship Festival in Nagoya, held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of friendship between the Philippines and Japan! 🇵🇭🇯🇵
It was a great honor to share the appeal of Filipino martial arts with so many people.
Mutya Filipino Fighting Arts is a martial art based on traditional Filipino fighting systems, where we study practical fighting methods using sticks, knives, and empty-hand techniques. In this demonstration, we showcased not only weapon techniques, but also a demonstration using the Malong, sharing the beauty of Filipino culture and martial arts.

I’m proud to have been part of Sentinel Gathering, FMA World Festival, and Lakbay Laban.
My sincere thanks and applause to the organizers, and of course to my Master, GM Mildred Nakamura, who brought me into the world of Filipino Martial Arts many years ago.
I was also honored and pleasantly surprised to receive the Loyalty Award from the FMA World Festival organizers.

祖父は本当にすごい人でした😎 ソ連の極東遠く離れた村で生まれ育ち、子どもの頃に第二次大戦で父を亡くし、狩りをして母やたくさんの兄弟姉妹を養っていました。
その後、航空の高等教育を受け、有名なヘリコプターパイロットになりました。長年の飛行時間が非常に多かったため早期退職し、沿海地方のタイガの真ん中に土地を買って家を建てました。僕が生まれてすぐ、その祖父のもとに預けられ、そこで育ちました。
私は学校の長期休暇やほとんどの週末を祖父と一緒に過ごし、2008年に亡くなるまでずっとそうしていました。祖父は僕に動物の足跡の読み方、草木の見分け方、銃の撃ち方、武器の扱い方などを教えてくれました。
10歳の時、祖父は僕に狩猟用ナイフをくれました。それは、捕虜になった日本兵の刀を改造したもので（戦後、ロシア極東ではそういう物がよくあったのです）、それがきっかけで日本の武器や日本そのものへの興味が芽生えました。そして今、僕はもう長年日本で暮らしています😁
祖父は生涯お酒もタバコもやらず、70代後半でも懸垂ができました。私にとって祖父は男らしさの手本であり、数えきれないほどの貴重な知識と技術を授けてくれた人です。
祖父には二人の娘がいて、孫である僕が生まれた時はとても喜びました。
そして今、私にも二人の娘がいます。

Since it’s the days of honoring ancestors here in Japan, this post is dedicated to my grandfather — Gennady Makarov.
My grandpa was awesome 😎 He was born and raised in the remote village of Soviet Far East. As a child, he lost his father in the war, and had to feed his mother and many brothers and sisters through hunting.
He got a higher education in aviation and became a well-known helicopter pilot. He retired early due to his huge number of flight hours, bought a plot of land right in the middle of the taiga, and built a house there. That’s where I was brought to be raised by my grandpa as soon as I was born.
I spent all my school holidays and almost every weekend with him until his passing in 2008. He taught me how to read animal tracks, identify plants and trees, shoot a rifle, and handle weapons.
When I was ten, he gave me a hunting knife made from the blade of some captured Japanese soldier’s sword (there was a lot of that stuff in the Russian Far East back then). That’s how my fascination with Japanese weapons — and Japan itself — began. And now I’ve been living here for many years 😁
All his life my grandfather never drank or smoked, and in his seventies he could still do pull-ups on a bar. For me, he became the ultimate example of manhood and gave me countless priceless skills and knowledge.
He had two daughters, and he was overjoyed when a grandson was born.
Now I have two daughters of my own.
The difference between the photos is about 60 years — grandpa was a handsome guy 😎
