In this conversation with Duy Nguyen, we explore the speculative future of the Vietnamese diaspora, navigating the blurred lines between inherited trauma and imagined identity. Centering on his project “Minimal Prayer,” Nguyen discusses how he utilizes a background in graphic design and multimedia installations to move beyond the traditional constraints of 2D photography. He transitions from purely documenting the past to building a science-fiction world where spiritual identity is a form of quiet resistance.
Nguyen is a Norwegian-Vietnamese designer and artist based between Oslo and Berlin. Born in a refugee camp in Malaysia and raised on Norway’s west coast, his work explores migration, diaspora, and multicultural identity. Moving beyond the trauma and politics of Vietnamese refugee history, Nguyen focuses on the present experiences of displaced people to imagine future forms of diasporic identity. He is a FUTURES 2026 Talent, nominated by Fotogalleriet.

I came into this year full of energy and motivation. Had just finished a great year-long residency at Künstlerhaus Bethanien and was riding a high. Started the year with a big trip to Vietnam. My first time returning to the motherland as an adult. This trip changed me in many ways. It made me understand myself, and my parents more. I could not fully know myself until I knew where I came from. Very thankful to everyone I met during this trip. Coming back to Norway after this trip was extremely draining. Still processing my identity, I was thrown into a whirlwind of practical things to deal with. Moving out of my home of 6 years. Transporting a whole life worth of things to storage. Followed by family issues, and financial instability. Spent the summer living between places and often times on couches of friends. Truly an uprooting year. I’m so incredibly grateful for all the great friends I have who has been there for me this year. I haven’t always been able to reciprocate, but I truly want to some day. You all are amazing. Teaching me that community is everything, and that I don’t have to go on this journey alone💙 my mental health had really been declining this year but thanks to everyone who has helped keep me sane and keep believing in me. Somehow through all of this, I managed to pull together a solo show, two group shows, an art fair, and two public open studio events. I do wish I had done more but honestly, I was in survival mode half of the year. I’ll be kind to myself and celebrate these wins. This year has definitely been very grounding and humbling. Some reality checks were made. I learned so much this year and feel more mature and fortified as the year comes to an end. Even though I’m not sure what next year holds, I’m very excited to face it. This time, more sustainable, more softly, and with more care for myself and others around me. Thank you all for your support💙 merry xmas
