While it may just look like a tent, I can assure you it was the most luxurious tent set up I could have imagined.
We did stay on one of ❄️the. coldest. nights.❄️ So it was a cold and windy stay. Luckily we had plenty of layers (and I mean lots of layers!) and a wood burning fireplace to keep us warm.
This was the closest I've been to true winter camping or camping in a tent. One day I may convince myself to actually go for it!

TREETOP TREKKING

Open in the winter & for a cool evening experience, heading to in the winter brings a different perspective
RICHMOND HILL SKATE TRAIL
📍 1300 Elgin Mills Rd E, Richmond Hill
While there are lots of great skate trails in York, we like this one because it’s smaller, close to parking & to food options a short drive fr. the park. There’s also a skate change area that is covered
MCMICHAEL GALLERY
📍10365 Islington Ave, Kleinburg
With the Canada Strong Pass, kids are free until Jan 15. On the 3rd Sunday of each month, the gallery also has free admission for all & family programming
AANIIN COMMUNITY CENTRE
📍 5665 14th Ave, Markham
There are 2 indoor playgrounds for less than $5/kid (no charge for adults) in Markham. This is the larger of the two (the other is Cornell). There are often free games in the lobby & a library w/ a play area too
MARKHAM MUSEUM
📍 9350 Markham Rd, Markham
This is a hidden budget friendly gem in Markham (~$20 for a family of 4). With an indoor exhibit on everyday heroes, this is perfect for kids 10 & under. Outside, there is free snowshoeing (weather permitting), trails, & historic houses
HEALTH & ACTIVE LIVING CENTRE
📍 160 Jim Mortson Dr, East Gwillimbury
One of the newest community centres in York Region, for a small fee, it has a great pool facility & indoor playground — a great way to spend an afternoon!

PRIDE OF CANADA CAROUSEL

While outdoors, this is always a hit. It is not open all the time but is budget friendly ($3/ride, discounts if you purchase more tix) & will be open during the long weekend (weather permitting). In the same area, is a small skate rink & a movie theatre

At Lakeridge Ski Resort
Opening December 20th for the season!
This is a super fun activity for kids and adults. Each ticket reserved you a 2 hours time slot. Each run took us about 15 minutes however we were very leisurely walking and taking our time. We did 6 runs in 1.5 hours.
There is a minimum height requirement of 42” and each person must ride in their own tube. Age 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Children cannot ride on a lap. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time through website.
Tips for visiting:
❄️Arrive 15 minutes early to get your reserved tickets and walk to the hill.
❄️Use the washroom before you head out so you don’t use up your time on the hill
❄️Dress warm! Although your bum doesn’t touch the snow directly, it is on the ground and it gets cold so wear snow pants or double up to stay warm.
Pricing is $40/person for a 2 hour time slot on Saturdays and Sundays, holidays and Christmas break.
$35/person Thursdays and Fridays
