Oggi lo riprendo con una consapevolezza diversa, con nuove sfumature, lasciando che il tempo e l’esperienza abbiano fatto il loro lavoro.

Quando ho visto il mio nome entrare nell’albo d’oro, accanto a quelli degli artisti che da bambino ascoltavo con stupore e venerazione, gli occhi si sono riempiti di lacrime. In quell’istante ho rivisto il cammino percorso: i sacrifici silenziosi, le rinunce, le porte chiuse, le ingiustizie inghiottite senza rumore. Tutto il peso delle stagioni trascorse a seminare nel vento, confidando che un giorno quel vento avrebbe restituito il canto. Il tempo, dopotutto, possiede una sua antica giustizia.
E nel nostro mestiere non esistono scorciatoie: la verità si compie soltanto sul palcoscenico. È lì che ogni parola perde valore se non è sostenuta dalla voce, dall’anima, dalla dedizione. Ed è lì che, prima o poi, ogni seme trova la sua primavera.
Ai miei allievi, ai miei colleghi, a tutti i cantanti lirici della mia generazione e a quelli che verranno dopo di noi, desidero dire una sola cosa: siate il vostro destino. Non permettete a nessuno di scrivere la vostra musica al posto vostro. Difendete la vostra identità, custodite la vostra voce come si custodisce una fiamma nella notte e non rinunciate mai alla vostra verità. Se crederete davvero in voi stessi e vi consacrerete anima e corpo a questa arte antica e immortale, le soddisfazioni arriveranno. Forse non quando le aspetterete, forse non nella forma che immaginerete, ma arriveranno.
