This intimate 1980 portrait captures Geldzahler in profile wearing blue-tinted sunglasses, exuding an effortlessly cool demeanor. Hockney’s use of fluid, expressive lines emphasizes the subject’s relaxed posture, while the sketch-like quality lends the work a spontaneous feel, as if capturing a quiet moment of contemplation or observation. The portrait demonstrates Hockney’s ability to evoke character through minimalist yet vivid strokes, and reflects the close friendship between Hockney and Geldzahler. On the verso of the portrait is a sketch related to the production design for the Metropolitan Opera’s 1981 production of “Parade”, a testament to Hockney’s avid draftsmanship!

The APAA spoke with the Kogans about their art collection and how their work with APAA advisor member, Victoria Burns, has invigorated their passion for art and streamlined the process of acquiring new works for their home.
Once the Kogans began working with almost 11 years ago, they found that Victoria’s expert skill and ability to advocate for them unlocked opportunities and access to artists they would have never discovered on their own. Beyond Victoria’s invaluable art world relationships, she also empowered and educated the Kogans to have an opinion on how to grow their collection. “Rather than ‘decorating’ our house with art, we were transformed into lifelong passionate collectors, understanding the artist’s background, environment, mindset and intention,” says Vicki Kogan.
