You spot the most incredible face, or the perfect little scene, but stopping suddenly just feels weird.
That happened to me in Paris.
I spotted this café hidden behind construction screens, and the shadows were so beautiful that I immediately wanted to draw them. So I did what I occasionally do in these situations: I pretended someone was calling me.
I turned around, walked back, nodded thoughtfully to my imaginary conversation… while secretly filming the scene.
I’m very glad I embarrassed myself for thirty seconds, because otherwise this sketch would never have existed.
It also turned out to be far more difficult to draw than to fake a phone call, but that’s another story. I talk about that sketch (and share a few more from Paris) over on Patreon, if you’d like to see them.
Also, Paris was a pleasant 32°C. Amazing how quickly that starts sounding refreshingly cool…
Apparently, rain isn’t always bad for exhibitions.
This one wasn’t planned at all, and somehow that’s probably why it became so special.

Which has always seemed slightly ridiculous to me, because I live in Italy.
Ten years ago, The Real Boat, the book I created with the wonderful Marina Aromshtam, was published in the UK. After that it sailed off to Japan, Australia, the United States and various other corners of the world.
Italy, meanwhile, remained stubbornly out of reach.
I was genuinely upset about this for years. Not every day, obviously. I have other hobbies. But still.
So today feels rather special.
Because on this completely unreasonable hot Saturday, instead of hiding in the shade with an ice cream, I’m preparing illustrations for the Italian edition.
Touch wood.
If everything goes according to plan, the book should finally be published here this autumn. Or possibly sooner. Again: touch wood.

I love this harbour illustration with the red boat.
The seagull print has been in my shop for years and is one of my bestsellers, especially in summer.
This one, however, has spent years waiting for me to make up my mind.
Every time I look at it, I think: should I finally add it to the shop?
And then I fail to reach a conclusion.
So I’m handing the problem over to you.

Should it become a print, or should I stop staring at it and accept that some decisions are simply beyond me?

To be fair, it’s nearly 3 by 4.5 metres. Sometimes I find it hard to believe it’s a painting myself.
The truth is, it never really occurred to me to print it. Painting it by hand seemed completely crazy, but also far more fun.
And it’s the biggest painting I’ve ever done so far.

Working on it brought back memories of my Academy years, when painting enormous frescoes felt like a fairly normal part of everyday life. It also reminded me how much I enjoy working on a large scale, and how much I would love to create more large paintings and murals in the future.
