Today we want to share Boris’ success. His humans have been working hard, alongside Leigh-Ann since their first consult in February 2025.
Video 1 was taken before we started working together & video 2 was a recent trip which his family say they’d never have considered attempting before.
When we first met Boris he was struggling around others dogs & people amongst other things. He was fearful in some situations, frustrated in others & really struggling to manage his arousal.
Alongside training we found a number of things also contributed to his progress:
- chemical castration wearing off
- identifying lameness, diagnosing hip dysplasia and starting pain relief
- starting fluoxetine (& Tessie when needed)
Boris’s human wanted to share the following:
“Boris & I have both changed, I can read his behaviour better & control it better… Boris is calmer. He isn’t perfect as there’s still some dog’s he’s reactive to. I can live with that, I don’t expect him to get on with everyone… as humans we don’t either.”

We first started working with Colin in 2024 when he was 18 months old. He had just been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and his behaviour was so difficult that behavioural euthanasia had already been discussed. His family reached out for advice and here’s what Colin’s mum has to say now…
“…after a very difficult reactive puppyhood and teenage years he is now a loving cuddly adorable friend - happy to be fussed by anyone who meets him. During his first year we seriously wondered if we would be able to keep him and would have to isolate him in another room in order for us to have any chance of relaxing quiet time. He now sleeps in our bed something no other dog before him has done!”

Hank started working with us in 2024. There’s been ups and downs. Adolescence, back pain, some new issues popping up….
BUT… Hank’s humans have stuck with it. Always kind, always compassionate & always ready to put in the work.
Hanks achieved so much in 2 years.
From the teen who couldn’t be examined at the vets, to this handsome chap, who goes to see the vet & the physiotherapists.
He can also struggle with new people and too much going on around him. But his family have learnt to understand how best to support & he continues to do so well ❤️

Joey & his humans started working with us in January this year…
• In December after suffering with back pain Joey couldn’t cope with seeing other dogs or unknown people. He was finding being outside the house at all very difficult.
• A few weeks ago he made friends with a new dog & the next time he saw them he was even excited to see their owner too! (Cue little excited sausage foot stomps)
• Joey recently trotted happily alongside a German Shepherd, a breed he’s previously always found scary.
Joey’s humans have said “we still have a long way to go but Joey’s recovery from reactions is getting so much better. I wish we’d found VBS so much earlier than we did.”

It is a false dichotomy.
It’s not one or the other. Our pets’ brains are in fact part of their physical anatomy.
Their emotional experiences & thoughts occur within their body.
Their emotional experiences have measurable effects on their physical wellbeing.
Their physical health directly influences their mental state and behaviour.
Limping is a behaviour. Vomiting is a behaviour. Coughing is a behaviour. They are also symptoms of a physical condition.
It’s so important to have a team who can help your dog with both of these areas & work in collaboration. You cannot address one without at least considering the other.

1) I said it before I had my daughter… and I’ll say it again with even more conviction. We should be parenting our pets. Parenting isn’t a specific set of behaviors it’s a concept, an attitude, a skill set which is transferable. I’d love to see a study on this, but I’d bet that how people treat their dogs mirrors their parenting choices & attitudes.
2) Everyone is an expert when they want to sell you something. This makes it really hard to figure out how to promote a business which is how I pay my mortgage etc but also share information which I honestly believe is true & important. Always think ‘what’s their motive?’ ‘What’s their qualifications?’ there’s too much dangerous advice out there because people are desperate for money & influence.
3) It makes my heart ache. But most of the problems we face in the animal behavior & welfare space are mirrored in how people raise their children too. We have a societal issue not a dog training issue.
To highlight my point… sleep training is EVERYWHERE. Despite the fact sleep training does not make the baby sleep longer, it makes them wake their carer up less. Sleep training under 6 months of age might increase the risk of SIDS. It is completely normal & developmentally appropriate for babies to wake & feed every few hours through the night.
Parents are sleep deprived & desperate whilst ‘experts’ are cashing in. Sound familiar?
